CHAPTER FOUR

WAVERING ~ALEXANDER STONE~ As I sat there, a familiar face from that fateful night sat beside me. The weight of my past mistake hung heavy in the air, a sin I had desperately tried to atone for. Gloria would have been disappointed if she knew the truth. In an attempt to seek redemption, I had sought forgiveness from Gloria, knowing deep down that my actions were unforgivable. And now, here she was - a living reminder of the mistake I had made. I answered my ringing phone, breaking the tense silence. Mark's voice came through the line, filled with anxiety as he informed me of the dissatisfaction among the investors gathered. I instructed him to buy me some time, to distract them with market updates as I made my way to them. As I glanced at her, I saw that same expression of hurt and betrayal she had worn a year ago. Had I tried to find her after that night? No, I hadn't. There was no need to search for a memory; she was etched in my mind forever. "Are you alright, sir?" Lexa's voice snapped me out of my reverie as I realized my hand was resting on hers. Quickly withdrawing my hand, I turned my gaze out the window, pretending to be engrossed in the passing scenery while my hand brushed against my lips, a subconscious gesture to shake off the lingering effect of her touch. "Drop me off at the office and take Miss Wyett back home," I instructed Collins, my driver. "Yes, sir," Collins acknowledged. The journey was quiet, and upon reaching the office, I was greeted by a line of staff eager to welcome me back. Lexa's eyes lit up as she took in the grandeur of my company, a testament to the hard work and dedication that had brought me to this point. I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride at how far I had come, all thanks to Gloria, who had played a significant role in helping me achieve my success. As the valet opened the car door for me, I hesitated, locking eyes with Lexa who sat there, her unwavering gaze fixed on me. "Please look after Ace until I return," I instructed her. "When will I see you again?" she inquired. Taken aback by her question, I sensed that all eyes were on us. How ignorant could she be? Furrowing my brow to mask my embarrassment, I responded. "I'm not sure, Lexa. We will discuss certain matters when I return," I informed her, walking away without a backward glance. After hours of negotiations with the investors, I found myself absentmindedly tapping the tip of my pen as they bickered incessantly. My thoughts drifted back to Lexa's bold yet innocent remark from earlier that morning in the lobby. A faint smile tugged at the corners of my lips. She had a way of unsettling me, stirring up a mix of emotions that I both hated and welcomed. "Sir, please take action," Mark urged. Gazing at each investor in the room, I abruptly brought my hand down on the desk, the loud sound echoing through the room and commanding instant silence. "Have you all finished?" I inquired but met with silence. "Just because the market hasn't been in our favor this time, does that mean we should give up and turn against each other?" I posed the question to the group. With a decisive move, Mark turned on the screen, revealing the new development for an alternative project as per my strategy, capturing their attention. "Does this address your concerns?" I directed my question to each of them. Silence lingered in the room as they remained speechless. Rising from my seat, I felt all eyes on me. Offering them a small smile, I exited the conference room, with Mark trailing close behind. As the day drew to a close, I returned home exhausted, loosening my tie as I entered the house. Glancing at the wall clock, which displayed 9:00 pm, I paused briefly. The sound of splashing water coming from the backyard swimming pool caught my attention. Intrigued, I made my way towards the pool, unbuttoning my sleeve and allowing a glimpse of my chest to show, my hair falling loosely around me. Standing by the pool's edge, I watched the figure gracefully swimming in the water. "Miss Wyett," I called out to her. Stunned, she gazed at me, her eyes widening in surprise as she saw her reflection in the water. "What do you think you're doing?" I inquired, admiring her beauty as she stood there drenched in water. "Sir Alexander," she uttered my name, the sound resembling soft music to my ears. "Isn't it rather late for a night swim?" I inquired, noticing she was dressed in a red bra and panties. My gaze briefly landed on the towel resting on the seat nearby. I reached for the towel, suggesting she come out of the water to avoid getting a chill. With grace, she emerged from the water, and I couldn't help but admire her elegant curves as I handed her the towel. "Thank you," she smiled. "As lovely as late-night swims are, catching a cold is a risk we shouldn't take. I need you to play your as a nanny, look after and care for my son," I scolded gently. She kept her gaze on her bare feet, and I wondered if I was being too harsh. I walked towards the kitchen, and she followed silently behind. "Come along," I instructed, not looking her way, as we both made our way to the kitchen. I opened the cupboards, and retrieved a mug, of raw chocolate powder, milk, and sugar, setting them on the kitchen counter. Once the cooker was on, I boiled water, sensing her gaze on me. Tapping on the counter, I stole a glance at her. Her hair was damp, water cascading from the strands. Her lips were full and red, her blue eyes twinkled, and the freckles on her nose and cheeks gave her a fairy-tale look. "I suggest you steer clear of the pool, for both your safety and Ace's," I said, trying to diffuse the tension. "I'm sorry, sir. I wasn't thinking," she replied, nervously biting her lower lip. Shifting my focus to the boiling water, I removed it from the cooker and poured it into the mug. Adding chocolate powder, milk, and sugar, I stirred the mixture. "Here, have this," I offered her the mug. She initially hesitated, her face reflecting surprise, before accepting it from me. I hoped she didn't misinterpret my gesture; I simply wanted to ensure she didn't catch a cold. "Ouch, it's hot!" she exclaimed. Approaching her, I swiftly took the mug from her hands and placed it on the table. As I gently touched the spot on her lips, she reciprocated, inspecting the burn. "For heaven's sake, Lexa, be careful," I scolded. She remained silent and motionless, my fingers lingering near her lips. I paused, becoming aware of my actions. Shifting my gaze from her lips to her eyes, I realized how close we were; our faces just inches apart. As she took a small step back, her hand reached out to grasp mine, her delicate fingers tracing the edge of my sleeve. At that moment, her touch ignited a spark within me, a feeling I both welcomed and resisted. "It's not as painful now," she murmured, her words barely audible. Relieved, I replied, "I'm glad to hear that. Just remember to be more cautious next time." I struggled to maintain composure, fighting the urge to pull her into my embrace and lose myself in a passionate kiss...
