Chapter 2 (Better place)

1368 Words
Neil's journey with his partner had taken at least 30 minutes. Leah was already sleeping amongst the silence, in Neil's lap. They had received 800,000 dollars as a reward. However, that was not the price of the deal, because Roger wanted an additional reward for Leah's life. 500,000 dollars they would receive after successfully killing Leah. Roger agreed. Neil's uneasy look couldn't be hidden by silence; he didn't know what to do when they reached the escape. Would he kill this clueless Leah right away? That seemed so heinous. "Damn, I haven't had time to wash my hands! Give me some tissues, Neil." Neil sighed heavily. He ignored Roger's request. "I was wondering if our stunt made the news or not." Neil was about to turn on the radio, making Roger tense up. Suddenly, Roger stopped Neil. "Hey, Rog!" Neil became annoyed; he wanted to turn it on again, but Roger stopped him. "The news doesn't matter, Neil. We had to be prepared for the consequences when we agreed to do this job. We're going to be hunted by the police, and all we have to do now is finish the job, take the money, and run out of this damn town, got it?" Neil frowned. "Why are you overreacting, Rog? I know that, so let me turn on the radio!" "No!" "Are you hiding something from me?" "What do you mean?" "If nothing, let me turn on the radio!" There was a bit of an argument; it wasn't easy for Neil to turn the radio back on. Roger chose to pull the car over on the dark side of the road. "Arguing will only make things worse, Neil. You'd better do it before the little girl gets into trouble. Maybe, in two hours or even in an hour, the police will catch up with us. Before that happens, she has to be dead." Without looking Neil in the eye, Roger ordered his best friend to kill Leah immediately. "She's sleeping, are you crazy?" "You're the crazy one, Neil. We're killers now, KILLERS! You need to wake up! And killers don't think about whether their victims are sleeping or not. Hurry down, stab him, then throw him off the cliff. The sooner the better!" Neil was depressed. He really didn't want to do this, but it had already happened. "Why are you silent? You can't? Fine, I'll do it!" Roger got out of the car angrily. Then, he drove toward Neil. He opened the car door and pulled Leah roughly. The little girl woke up from her sleep in shock. And began to feel scared. "Hey, hey, Roger! Wait!" Roger didn't care. He rummaged through Neil's jacket for the knife underneath. "Roger, stop!" But Roger didn't stop. "Daddy!" Her voice trembled, Leah cried. "You scared her, Rog! Give Leah to me!" "Damn, where did you keep the knife?! You can't do that, let me do it! Waiting for you is like giving up on the money!" Neil pushed Roger until the man fell down with Leah. Leah, who was crying loudly, broke free. She ran towards Neil, feeling scared and confused. The little girl probably thought that Neil and Roger were fighting. "It's okay, Leah. Everything will be fine. Come here." Neil hugged Leah and wiped away her tears. Although the little girl hadn't calmed down yet, she had stopped crying. Roger laughed, frustrated at Neil, who looked like Leah's guardian angel. How could a murderer have a good heart? It didn't make sense. "At this rate, we'll end up in jail! Go kill her, Neil!" "Shut up!" "What? Are you afraid he'll find out that his mother is dead?!" "Roger! I said don't...." "Ok, I'll shut up. But let's work well together, we should kill the little girl before David finds out." Roger didn't say that name on purpose. And only realised after a few seconds. "No, I mean..." He tried to clarify, but it was useless because Neil had already guessed Roger's thoughts. "Leah, can you wait in the car for a minute? I need to talk with Uncle Roger. I promise I'll come to you when I'm done." Without waiting for Roger to say anything, Neil spoke to Leah. Leah nodded. She seemed to trust Neil completely. Leah was now in the car with the engine running, while Neil immediately dragged Roger away from the car. "Roger, that David you're talking about isn't our best friend, is he?" Because if it really was him, then Neil could no longer think clearly. Roger was silent. "Tell me, Rog!" Neil grabbed Roger's shirt collar angrily. "Yes, it's him." Roger ventured to raise his head. "We just killed David's wife, our best friend. And now, we have to kill his daughter, too. Are you satisfied with my answer?" Neil was at a loss for words. There was a rumbling, anger, fear, and guilt in his chest. Within seconds, Neil punched Roger in the face with all his strength until the man fell down. "You're crazy! You killed our best friend's wife! Where's your conscience, Rog?!" shouted Neil, relentlessly attacking Roger. However, Roger could no longer hold him back. He immediately held Neil's hand. Then he knocked Neil down. "Me?! We did it together, Neil! Even though it was I who stabbed him to death, you played a part in it too! I knew you'd be like this if you knew who we had to kill, so I deliberately didn't tell you." Neil laughed bitterly. "Bastard." "So what? We already f*****g did it. So kill Leah quickly. Or David will find us soon." "Roger, David's our friend, why would you do this?" Neil's eyes had heated up, his tears ready to fall. "I'm willing because I need the money, i***t! Remember, your mother needs you now, and I need the money for my wife, too! So wake up and get on with what we've already done!" snapped Roger. He wiped the blood from his jaw. Stood up. "Where are you going?" "Killing David's daughter, of course, what else?" Roger moved towards Leah, who was in the car. However, Neil wouldn't let him. "Don't you dare touch Leah." "Are you serious?" "Sure." Roger didn't hesitate to deliver a crushing blow to Neil's face. The man fell down in pain. Then Roger turned to Leah, who had been watching from the car window. "Wait, Roger, don't do it!" Try as he might, Neil tried to hold Roger back until the punching started again. Leah, who was in the car, became even more frightened. "Please, Daddy! Uncle Roger, stop!" Leah cried and screamed, but that didn't stop the two grown men. It was finally Neil who lost after Roger found Neil's knife embedded in his pants belt. Yes, Roger stabbed Neil. "You're not really human, Roger." Roger laughed. "Whatever, my friend. I'll end it all and accept the money. But don't worry, I'll still give you your share. Hopefully, when that time comes, you'll still be alive. If not, I'll pay your mother's hospital bills." Without any guilt, Roger left Neil lying there. "No, Leah...." Neil's vision began to blur. However, he had to stay conscious for Leah. "Come here, Sweetie. Uncle will do it quickly, so you don't feel the pain. Come here, don't be afraid hahaha." Leah moved to the back seat, her face filled with fear, especially after seeing Neil being stabbed with a knife. The boy knew he was in danger, but he could only cry. Roger pulled Leah's leg and prepared to stab her. Leah screamed, "Daddy! Help me!" Neil arrived at the last second. He hit Roger on the head with a rock. The knife in his hand was thrown away, and Leah was saved. "Get lost, Roger!" Neil pulled Roger's body and pushed him. The man was unconscious. "Daddy!" Leah hugged Neil. "It's okay, Leah. It's all right." Neil quickly moved Leah into the front seat, and he got into the car, driving it, leaving Roger unconscious. "Where are we going, Dad?" "We're going far away." "To that place you said was better?" Neil smiled, but his heart ached. A great guilt had filled his head. Especially when he looked into Leah's eyes. "Of course."
