Chapter 18: The Exposure

430 Words
The day felt normal at first. Classes, laughter in the hallways, the smell of food drifting from the cafeteria. But Stephanie carried a knot in her stomach—an instinct that something was coming. She was right. --- By afternoon, whispers spread like smoke. Students glanced at her and giggled. Some pointed. Others whispered behind their palms. Stephanie’s heart sank. When she checked her phone, dozens of notifications popped up. Her breath caught—someone had leaked the video. The same video of her and Sean, inches apart in the library, staring at each other like the world had vanished. Her phone buzzed with a new message: “Told you. Now let’s see how long Sean stands by you.” —V --- Stephanie couldn’t breathe. She rushed to the bathroom, locked herself inside, and slid down the wall as tears fell. Every fear she’d buried had now come true. A few minutes later, Sean burst through the door, ignoring the shocked looks of the girls inside. “Steph!” He knelt beside her, gently lifting her chin. “Hey… look at me.” Her voice shook. “Everyone saw it, Sean. They’ll drag me through the mud. My reputation is gone. Vanessa won.” Sean wiped her tears with his thumb, his jaw tight with anger. “She didn’t win. Not while I’m here. Not while we’re together.” “But—” “No,” he interrupted firmly. “Let them talk. Let them gossip. I don’t care what they think. The only thing that matters is what I feel. And what I feel for you is real.” --- Stephanie searched his eyes, trembling. He meant it. Every word. Before she could respond, the bathroom door swung open—Vanessa walked in, arms crossed, smirk plastered on her face. “Well, well. Look at the lovebirds, hiding from the storm.” Sean stood, fury in his gaze. “Enough, Vanessa. Whatever this obsession is—whatever game you’re playing—it ends now.” Vanessa tilted her head mockingly. “Oh, Sean. You think love is enough to save her? Wait until the whole campus turns against her. Then we’ll see if you’re still this noble.” She turned on her heel and left, her laughter echoing behind her. --- Stephanie clutched Sean’s hand. “She’s not going to stop.” Sean squeezed tighter. “Then neither will I. We fight this together.” For the first time, Stephanie didn’t feel like prey anymore. For the first time… she felt like a warrior. End of Chapter 18.
