Chapter 12: Broken Promises

405 Words
For days after Sean’s confession, Stephanie carried a storm inside her chest. The rumors, Vanessa’s cruelty, Sean’s father’s threats—it all weighed on her like chains. But the most dangerous chain of all… was her own heart. --- It was a Saturday evening when everything snapped. Sean had planned a small surprise for her—a quiet dinner at a rooftop restaurant away from campus, just the two of them under the stars. He smiled the moment she arrived. “See? No crowd, no whispers, no Vanessa. Just us.” And for a while, it felt perfect. They laughed, shared stories, and for once, Stephanie allowed herself to imagine what life could be like if none of the chaos existed. But perfection never lasted long. --- Halfway through dinner, Sean’s phone buzzed. He frowned when he saw the name. “Who is it?” Stephanie asked softly. Sean hesitated. “My dad.” Her chest tightened. “Answer it.” He shook his head. “No. Tonight is about you.” But the phone kept buzzing, insistent, relentless. Finally, Sean picked up—frustration written all over his face. The call was short, but Stephanie could hear his father’s harsh voice even from across the table. When Sean hung up, his hand trembled slightly. “What did he say?” she asked carefully. Sean looked at her, torn. “He gave me an ultimatum. End this… or lose everything. And if I don’t, he’ll make sure you pay the price.” Stephanie’s breath caught. “What does that mean?” “He knows where you live, Steph. He knows about your scholarship. He can destroy everything you’ve worked for.” Her fork slipped from her hand. The world tilted. Suddenly, the fantasy of them against the world shattered into something ugly, terrifying, and real. --- That night, Stephanie stood outside the restaurant, staring into Sean’s pleading eyes. “Steph, we can fight this. I’ll protect you.” Tears burned her eyes as she whispered the words she thought she’d never say. “No, Sean. This has to end.” “Don’t do this,” he begged, his voice breaking. She forced herself to turn away, each step heavier than the last. With every tear that fell, she felt the sharp sting of a promise breaking—hers, his, theirs. And just like that… everything they had built began to crumble. End of Chapter 12.
