It had been nearly a month since Stephanie walked away from Sean, and she thought she was finally starting to breathe again.
Until the day fate cornered her.
---
Professor Adeyemi had announced a new campus project: a paired research assignment, worth 30% of their grade. Names were called, students scribbled down partners, and then the professor looked up.
“Stephanie Williams… and Sean Adi.”
The classroom went still.
Stephanie froze, her pen slipping from her fingers. Sean’s eyes immediately found hers from across the room—intense, unreadable, but burning all the same.
Vanessa nearly jumped out of her seat. “Sir, that must be a mistake!” she protested.
But Professor Adeyemi waved her off. “No changes. This pairing is final.”
The decision was sealed.
---
That afternoon, they met in the library, both stiff with unspoken words.
Sean broke the silence first.
“So… looks like the universe doesn’t care about our break-up.”
Stephanie’s lips tightened. “We’re here to work, not talk about the past.”
“Steph,” he leaned closer, lowering his voice, “the past is still alive. Don’t pretend it’s not.”
Her heart stuttered, but she forced herself to look down at her notes. “We don’t have to make this complicated. Just… let’s finish the project and move on.”
But moving on was impossible.
Every time their hands brushed as they reached for the same book, Stephanie felt a spark.
Every time Sean leaned too close, the scent of his cologne made her dizzy.
And every time she looked into his eyes, she saw the boy who once promised to fight for her.
---
One evening, while working late, a power outage swept through the library. Darkness swallowed the room, broken only by the glow of Sean’s phone flashlight.
Stephanie startled, clutching her chest.
“Relax,” Sean murmured, stepping beside her. “I’ve got you.”
In the silence, with shadows dancing around them, the weight of their distance shattered. Their eyes met, raw and unguarded.
And for a moment—just a moment—the world outside didn’t exist.
But before Sean could close the space between them, Stephanie whispered shakily:
“We can’t do this again.”
Sean’s jaw tightened, his voice hoarse. “Then why does it feel like we never stopped?”
