Chapter 15: The Confession

368 Words
The project dragged on for weeks, and no matter how hard Stephanie tried to keep her walls up, Sean kept slipping through the cracks. His jokes still made her laugh when she wasn’t supposed to. His eyes still found her in every crowded room. And his presence… still felt like home. --- One late evening, after hours of work in the empty library, Stephanie began packing her books. Sean leaned back in his chair, watching her carefully. “Steph…” His voice was low, hesitant. “I can’t keep pretending this doesn’t matter.” She froze. “We’re just here for the project. Nothing else.” He stood, closing the distance between them. “Don’t lie to me. You still feel it. I see it every time you look at me.” Her hands trembled as she shoved her notebook into her bag. “Even if I do… it doesn’t change anything. Your father hates me. Vanessa is waiting for me to slip. I won’t let my life fall apart because of us.” Sean’s jaw clenched. “Then let it fall apart for me. I’ll pick up every piece.” Stephanie’s eyes brimmed with tears. “You don’t get it—” “No, you don’t get it,” he cut in, his voice breaking. “I love you, Stephanie. I’ve tried to push it down, ignore it, pretend I can move on—but I can’t. You’re it for me. You always have been.” The words hit her like a storm. She wanted to run. She wanted to melt into him. She wanted everything and nothing at once. Her heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear herself whisper: “Sean… I love you too. But love isn’t always enough.” He reached for her hand, gripping it tightly. “It is for me. And I’ll prove it to you—no matter what it costs.” --- That night, Stephanie walked away again, but her steps felt heavier than ever. Because now the truth was out. No more hiding. No more pretending. They were in love. And the world was about to test just how far that love could go. End of Chapter 15.
