Chapter 8: Secrets Revealed

350 Words
The tension with Vanessa still lingered, but Stephanie noticed Sean growing quieter in the days that followed. His usual playful smirk had dimmed, and for the first time, he seemed distracted. One evening after class, Stephanie found him sitting alone under the old oak tree near the faculty building, staring into space. “Sean?” she called softly. He looked up, eyes clouded with something she couldn’t quite read. “Steph… can I tell you something?” She nodded, sitting beside him. He hesitated before speaking. “You know my dad owns Adi Holdings, right? He’s… strict. Controlling. To him, I’m not just his son, I’m an heir. Everything I do is about image, reputation, the family name.” Stephanie listened silently as Sean clenched his fists. “He found out about us.” Stephanie’s heart skipped. “About… us?” “Yeah. About you. He said I’m embarrassing the family by dating a ‘nobody from the street.’ He wants me to cut it off.” The words stung more than Stephanie wanted to admit. She stared at the ground, her fingers tightening around her book. “So what are you going to do?” Sean turned to her, his voice low but steady. “I told him no. For the first time in my life, I told him no.” Stephanie’s eyes widened. “Sean… why would you do that? This is all pretend. You don’t have to fight him over me.” But Sean just looked at her, searching her face with an intensity that made her chest ache. “What if it doesn’t feel pretend anymore?” he whispered. Stephanie’s breath caught in her throat. The silence between them was heavy, charged, dangerous. --- Later that night, Stephanie lay awake, her mind racing. Sean Adi—the arrogant, untouchable rich boy—was defying his powerful father for her. But instead of feeling happy, she felt terrified. Because the deeper they went, the harder it would be to walk away. And she wasn’t sure if her heart could survive what was coming. End of Chapter 8.
