Chapter 4: The Heiress Awakens

788 Words
Eva woke to the crackle of a roaring fire and a heavy, echoing silence. The suffocating cold of the Blackwood Abyss was entirely gone, replaced by a radiant warmth. She slowly opened her eyes, blinking against the amber glow of a massive stone fireplace. She wasn’t dead. She wasn’t broken. She was lying in a colossal bed draped in heavy midnight furs. The room around her was vast and ancient, its walls built from dark volcanic blocks. Towering arched windows revealed nothing but the thick, impenetrable fog outside. It looked like the master chamber of a fortress long forgotten by the surface world. Eva sat up abruptly. She instinctively clutched her ribs, bracing for the agonizing fire of her shattered bones. But there was nothing. Her body felt perfectly knitted, smooth, and stronger than it had ever been. She pulled back the heavy furs and slid her legs out of the bed, her bare feet touching the cold stone floor. As she stood, she caught a glimpse of herself in a tall, tarnished mirror across the room. The malnourished, overlooked strategist of the Silver Moon Pack was gone. The dirt and dried blood had been completely washed away, leaving her skin radiating a faint silver luminescence. Intrigued by a strange warmth on her back, she turned and looked over her shoulder. Spanning across her shoulder blades, etched into her skin in shimmering silver lines, was an intricate crest—a silver wolf coiled around a crescent moon. It was the sacred mark of the First Luna. A pureblood lineage. Before she could process the shock, the heavy wooden doors of the chamber creaked open. Eva scrambled backward, pulling a fur blanket tightly to her chest as a towering figure stepped into the firelight. It was the man from the ice. He wore a loose, dark tunic that did little to hide the breadth of his scarred chest. His piercing amber eyes locked onto hers, burning with an intense focus. The air in the room grew heavy, thick with the scent of wild ozone and raw power. "You are awake," Dominic said. His deep voice sent a shiver straight down Eva's spine, yet it wasn't threatening; it was reassuring, like the steady rumble of thunder. "Where... where am I?" Eva asked, forcing her voice to remain steady. To her amazement, her inner wolf, which had been dormant for eighteen years, suddenly stretched inside her mind, not in fear, but in profound recognition. "What did you do to me? What is this mark?" Dominic walked toward the bed, his movements fluid. He stopped at a respectful distance, the sheer force of his proximity still making Eva’s breath hitch. He didn't crowd her, honoring her boundary with an unnatural stillness. "You are in my sanctuary, deep beneath the surface," Dominic said, his gaze fixed on her with unwavering intensity. "And that mark is your true birthright. Your veins carry the bloodline of the First Luna. The fools you served tried to suppress it by keeping you away from the lunar ley-lines, but my awakening shattered their dampening spells." Eva stared at him, her analytical mind piecing the puzzle together. "Kael knew... He didn't just reject me because of Sasha's alliance. He kept me as a servant because he knew if I awakened, my bloodline would eclipse his authority." "Kael is a coward playing at being a king," Dominic growled softly, though his anger was clearly directed at the Alpha, not her. "He traded your potential to secure the Blood Claw's crystal trade because he lacked the strength to secure his own borders. He feared your mind, and he feared your blood." Eva looked into the amber of his eyes. For three years, she had run the Silver Moon's shadow-economy, securing their resources while being treated like dirt. Now, this ancient predator was looking at her as an equal. "I cannot stay here," Eva said quietly, her voice tight but resolute. "Kael and Sasha will hunt me. I hold the magical blood-seals to their entire supply chain in my head. If they realize I survived, they will tear this forest apart to silence me." Dominic let out a low chuckle that vibrated through the room. "Let them hunt," Dominic said, walking toward the heavy double doors. He paused, looking back at her over his broad shoulder. "Tomorrow, the alphas of the continent gather at the neutral borders for the seasonal supernatural council. Your former Alpha will be there, boasting of his new alliance." Dominic opened the door, revealing the torch-lit corridor. "Rest, Eva. Tomorrow, we attend that council. You will not hide in the shadows anymore. We will show them exactly what happens when you throw the true Queen into the abyss."
