•°• "In the presence of power, even the simplest gestures can spark questions—especially when those gestures speak of things unsaid." •°• The morning sun filtered through the grand windows, casting a soft glow over the royal chamber. The soft rustle of silks and the distant hum of palace servants filled the air as Calyx sat with his maids gathered around him. His body was still sore from the previous day's events, but the warmth of their concern made it bearable. Suddenly, the door to the chamber creaked open, and a group of Kai Kia maids stepped in, their faces lined with polite curiosity. They wore elegant gowns, each embroidered with symbols of their kingdom’s prosperity, and their sharp eyes flicked to Calyx’s figure immediately. Yet, what caught their attention more than his royal attire was the sight of his three maids—Lila, Elara, and Celine—hovering close, adjusting his robe and fussing over him as if they had every right to do so. The Kai Kia maids exchanged puzzled glances, their expressions shifting between politeness and confusion. They had been assigned to guide King Calyx around the palace, to show him the treasures of their land and ensure his visit was smooth. But here, in this moment, they witnessed something far beyond their expectations—a ruler, revered by many, seemingly allowing his personal maids to tend to him with such familiarity. “Apologies for the intrusion, Your Majesty,” one of the Kai Kia maids said, stepping forward with a bow. “We have come to fulfill our duties—to escort you through the palace and assist in anything you require.” The maids from Calyx’s own kingdom straightened immediately, their gazes sharp. Lila, ever protective, stepped in front of Calyx, her eyes narrowed. “There’s no need for that. The King has everything he needs right here.” Elara crossed her arms, her posture defensive. “We’re more than capable of guiding His Majesty. You don’t have to trouble yourselves.” The tension in the air grew thicker, and Calyx watched silently as the two groups faced off. A small smile tugged at his lips. He raised his hand, silencing them before things could escalate further. “Enough.” His voice was calm but firm, cutting through the rising conflict. “There’s no need for such disagreement. These ladies have been gracious enough to offer their services, and I will accept them.” The Kai Kia maids blinked in surprise, their gazes flicking between Calyx and his own attendants. Clearly, they were not accustomed to seeing a king extend such trust—and so easily—toward strangers, especially in a situation where etiquette and caution ruled the halls. One of the maids, with dark eyes that held a hint of intrigue, stepped forward. “Your Majesty, surely you understand... this is not how things are usually done in our kingdom. The presence of your personal maids—so close, so familiar—might be seen as unusual.” Calyx offered a measured smile, though a quiet amusement flickered in his amber gaze. “Perhaps, but customs differ from place to place. I am here as a guest, and I see no harm in allowing my people to care for me. It does not mean I do not appreciate your hospitality.” The maid hesitated, clearly searching for words. Her eyes darted briefly to Lila, who still stood rigid, her protective instincts barely concealed. “Still… even so, a king should maintain a certain distance from personal attendants. The appearance of it... well, it can lead to misunderstanding.” Calyx's smile deepened slightly, his expression serene. “Understand this—it’s not about appearances. It’s about trust. These women have served me well for many years. They’ve protected me through hardship and kept my kingdom safe. If they stand beside me now, it’s because I trust them with more than my power.” The maids exchanged glances once more, and though confusion lingered in their eyes, none dared question further. They had heard of Calyx’s reputation—his wisdom, his sense of duty, his uncommon humanity for a king of his status—but witnessing it firsthand was something else entirely. Still, one of the Kai Kia maids stepped closer, cautiously. “Very well, Your Majesty. Since you insist, I shall leave it at that. But I must inform you—we’ve been tasked with showing you around the palace. Shall we proceed?” Calyx turned toward his own maids, who now watched him expectantly. Lila’s brows furrowed deeply, as though she wished to argue more, but he raised a hand to stop her. “There’s no need to worry. These women have been sent by the Kai Kia royal family to guide me. It’s part of our agreement. You will assist them, and everything will be fine.” Lila opened her mouth to protest, but the stern look in his eyes silenced her. Reluctantly, she nodded, though she wasn’t happy about it. With a faint sigh, Calyx stood from the chair, his posture dignified but weary. The Kai Kia maids watched closely, their sharp gazes taking in every subtle movement, every detail of the man they had only heard stories about. Before they could step outside, however, one of Calyx’s maids reached forward hesitantly, her hand briefly grazing his arm. “Your Majesty,” Celine murmured softly, “You... you should check if you’re feeling well enough. It’s still too soon after your ordeal.” The other maids, too, looked at him with worry, their eyes scanning him as though expecting something more. Calyx gave them a reassuring smile, though there was a weariness beneath it. “I’m fine, truly. You don’t need to fuss. Come now, let us see what Kai Kia has to offer.” The maids exchanged brief, reluctant looks before falling silent. Calyx’s strength was obvious—he carried himself with the authority of a king, no signs of lingering weakness in his posture. But his eyes, those deep amber pools, carried an unspoken weariness that they couldn’t miss. The Kai Kia maids, meanwhile, watched quietly from the doorway, their eyes narrowing slightly in observation. One of them, a graceful young woman with long dark hair, finally spoke. “Your Majesty,” she said softly, “We will lead you now. But... forgive us if we seem a little confused. The way your maids treat you—so intimately—this is not the usual conduct for a king.” Calyx turned slightly, meeting her gaze with his own steady one. “Perhaps it’s different here. Back home, loyalty comes in many forms. And these women... they have been with me through thick and thin.” The maid blinked, tilting her head. “Yet, no king would usually... allow such closeness.” Calyx’s smile remained calm, but his tone carried a subtle edge. “I’m not most kings.” The Kai Kia maids exchanged wary glances, but none dared press further. For now, they led him down the grand corridors, the golden sunlight filtering through stained glass windows, highlighting the intricate tapestries that lined the walls. The air was thick with history, and though the palace itself was breathtaking, Calyx could feel the weight of expectation hanging over every step. As they moved through the halls, the Kai Kia maids began sharing bits of palace lore—stories of great battles, tales of kings and queens, and the magnificent beauty of their kingdom. Calyx listened attentively, but his mind couldn’t shake the nagging reminder: why he had truly come here, what secret had brought him to this place, far from the safety of his own kingdom. He glanced at the maids walking silently behind him—Lila, Elara, and Celine—all carefully assessing his every move, their concern evident in their eyes. They had been loyal to him from the start, but now, even that loyalty had been stretched thin. If they ever discovered the reason for his visit, they would be devastated. They would argue, perhaps refuse to accompany him further. And so, Calyx made his decision early—he would keep the truth to himself. The palace tour continued, each chamber more opulent than the last, until they finally reached the grand royal gardens. The sight took his breath away—the carefully sculpted paths winding through fields of flowers, trees laden with blossoms, and fountains sparkling in the sun. As they stood there, taking in the beauty, one of the Kai Kia maids, her gaze thoughtful, finally spoke again. “Your Majesty, we’ve been informed that the royal family is eager to meet you. They await your decision regarding the princesses.” Calyx’s jaw tightened slightly at her words, but he nodded. “Yes, I understand. I have been given time to make my choice.” The maid glanced at him cautiously. “I hope you’ll take this matter seriously. This is not just a formality—it is the foundation of a lasting alliance between our kingdoms.” Calyx looked out across the gardens, his thoughts momentarily drifting elsewhere. He could feel the weight of those words, the unspoken truth beneath them. A marriage—no, this wasn’t just about two people. It was a union between two empires, a strategic alliance that could either bring peace or ignite war. And in the center of it all, he would have to choose. He would have to choose a bride. The thought tightened his chest once more, but Calyx remained composed, his voice steady as he responded. “I will take everything into consideration. My duty is to my people—and to the future.” The Kai Kia maids bowed slightly, their expressions neutral, but their eyes shimmered with subtle curiosity. They were watching closely, each interaction noted, each detail logged. And though they couldn’t yet piece together the full picture, they could sense that Calyx carried something more than mere kingship in his heart. Something guarded, something heavy. As they moved deeper into the palace, the maids continued their observations, but Calyx could feel their gaze lingering on him longer than before—like they were trying to understand the man behind the crown. And perhaps they were right to question. After all, a king who welcomed such closeness with his own personal maids... was no ordinary ruler.
