Maybe it's just the shock—" She was looking straight at me, helpless and terrified but managed a smile. "Okay then, I believe you. It's probably just the shock." She forced a smile though I knew better. I felt my throat tighten, my hands clenching into fists. The doctor had assured me that it went well, so why? "Don't worry," I said firmly, squeezing her hand in mine. "I'll find the best doctors, the best healers even—whatever it takes, you'll be okay." "Ryder. It's fine," she finally said, touching my arm as if wanting to comfort me. "I'm just glad to be alive. My legs aren't that important." And
