ETHAN’S POV
This is the right time for me to finally get what I’ve always wanted, but Kathy isn't playing along. I have spent all my life plotting for the perfect moment for me to finally be the CEO of the Fontaine clothing and wine brand and pay them for the pain they had caused me.
They took everything I had ever wanted from me. They took my family due to the careless fire accident that happened years back. Now I am nothing but hopeless.
Just like my father would always say, “Humans and gods are alike; we are the makers of destiny, and we forge our own path.” I am about to make something out of my miserable life and the only key to that is if Kathy agrees to marry me.
“Where is Katherine?” James asked, jolting me back to reality as I was deep in my thoughts.
“She isn't back yet, sir. The last time we spoke she angrily left the dining room.”
“Do you have any idea where she could be?” he asked, his voice laced with frustration and concern as he placed his hands on my shoulder. I had never seen him this worried, and, of course, Kathy had stayed out this late in the night.
“She is a girl, and it's 1 am; perhaps she'll be in a bar or something.”
“She’ll never disgrace me like that,” he cuts in. Here comes the master of perfection. He’ll not even let her be herself.
“I’m sure she’ll be back soon," James said. Just give her time.”
“Look at you, so concerned and intentional. I wonder what's keeping both of you from having the best relationship, especially now that I need a son to help my daughter run the company. You should be confident, Ethan. I expect a wedding soon.”
He left the room, and I was filled with so much confidence. I am getting closer to my dreams and no one is going to stop me. He had already seen me and that was what I needed. I went back to my bed with lots of thoughts in my head. Thoughts on how to get Kathy to see me romantically—all she did was to see me as a brother or best friend. I don't want that, my plans are bigger than that.
The next day, we didn't get any call from Kathy. It was getting more frustrating as all her numbers were not reachable. James wasn't himself and the media was beginning to ask questions.
I walked up to his office and he was not having it. “James, you have to put yourself together,” I said, consoling him as he had a blunt in his hands and whiskey on the table. I know he was just trying to calm his thoughts, or he’d die of high blood pressure. Kathy was his life—she was everything to him. She was both a daughter and an asset to him, and he loved her more than anything.
“Kathy had never gone missing before. What would you rather I do?”
“I want you to calm down, James.”
“I can't,” he thundered. He slammed his hand on the table, causing his glass of whiskey to slip and fall.
“s**t!”
It occurred to me that Kathy had a birthday gift from her father when she turned eighteen. It was her mother's necklace, and she never took it off. I once heard James talking to his friend about putting a tracking device on it. He didn't remember this now because of too many thoughts running through his mind, but now was the time for me to play the hero.
“I’ll be right back,” I said in haste, and headed straight to meet a friend of mine who would help me track her down. When I got there, she got the job done in seconds. Kathy was in Capri, Italy, in a cabin. That was such a bold move to pull on James, given how he had shaped her to make her live in his shadow.
I guess the sleeping dog didn't want to lie anymore.
I got home immediately and dropped the news on James. He has this bittersweet feeling even though he doesn't want to show it. He was happy to know his daughter was somewhere breathing and still mad. She had to run away like a teen.
“When do we leave to get her?” I asked. There was a pause.
“We leave—now,” he said, leaving the scene immediately. There was no atom of patience in James Fontaine. “Fine,” I replied, and picked a few things for my rescue mission and headed to the private jet. One thing with the Fontaines is they are always going to fly in style no matter what.
By the next day, we were already in Capri, and we tracked her down to a cabin. We knocked twice and there was no response. It was me, James and some of his guards.
“We have to break in,” he said.
“No, wait for one more knock,” I replied.
We knocked again, and a tall man opened the door. There was a little pause. He had towels on and sweat dripping down his chest, making him look hot. You need not be told that he just had a s*x marathon.
“Where is my daughter?” James asked, his voice was mean.
The young man didn't say a word. “Where is Katherine?” Just as I was about to say something, I spotted Kathy with her hair rough, half naked with a cup of whatever she was drinking.
“Katherine!” I called out, moving the young man aside. James and the men walked in also.
She stood shocked with the cup dropping from her hands. She couldn't say a word.
“Is this how you chose to disgrace me?” James asked. “I have given you everything and this is how you choose to pay me back….”
“You have given me nothing but suppressed emotions and control,” Kathy cuts in. I have been suffocating beside you, and you didn't even notice. I wanted freedom, and if you didn't give it to me, I might as well take it myself.”
“Get in the car, Katherine Fontaine. We’ll finish this when we get back to England before anyone sees us.”
“Are you worried I’ll disgrace you? The internet is going to know that I’m not the perfect daughter you've always wanted and am I flawed? I am not going anywhere with you, Father.”
