Chapter 2

The system notifications immediately went wild. System: See! I told you so! And you're still hiding your identity and lying to her! How heartbroken is she going to be when she finds out! I glared at it but didn't stop Cecily. If she was willing to do it, then let her. But that very night, a post titled "Female Entrepreneur Disguises as Cleaning Lady to Deceive Impoverished Student, Exploits Free Labor" shot straight to the top of the trending list. The attached was a video of her handing me peaches and doing my chores. A: [Deceiving an impoverished student? I hope she rots in hell!] B: [Trampling on a poor student's dignity like that—how can anyone be so black-hearted!] The online vitriol rushed at me like a tidal wave. Scenes of the cyberbullying from my past life flashed repeatedly in my mind. My blood rushed to my head, and my temples throbbed violently. With trembling hands, I tapped on the video, my teeth grinding in anger. The camera angle was perfect—it had clearly been shot deliberately. I immediately pulled out my phone, found Cecily's number, and dialed. She answered, sobbing so hard she could barely form a coherent sentence. "Evelyn, how could you guard against me like I'm some kind of thief? You're so powerful and wealthy. You knew how hard things were for me in the research group, yet you wouldn't even help me find another job! How can you live with yourself?" Before I could snap back, the translucent system notifications drifted across my vision again. System: You shouldn't have lied to her in the first place. Don't break this poor girl's grateful heart! System: Hurry up and use your resources to help her get into the Research Institute. That's the only way she'll develop the miracle d**g! I completely ignored the comments. I sneered at Cecily over the phone, "I have money, yes, but I am under no obligation to find you a job! Aren't you supposed to be independent and strong? Then work hard on your own!" ***** I returned to my hotel suite, my emotions still in turmoil. The hotel manager ran in, holding a tablet with an anxious expression. I looked closely and saw dozens of negative reviews suddenly popping up, dragging the hotel's rating down to rock bottom. A: [The sheets had blood on them and weren't sanitized.] B: [Hidden cameras installed in the rooms.] One bad review after another, complete with realistic-looking photos. Cecily had liked every single one of those negative reviews. Even major influencers with millions of followers were reposting them. The internet erupted into complete chaos. The rooms that usually required booking weeks in advance were now completely empty. Rage flared in my chest, making my entire body shake. Just then, the system notifications appeared again. System: Cecily is the chosen one. You're facing divine retribution for not helping her. Help her get into the Research Institute, or your father will be rushed to the ICU within three days.
