My chest tightened.
I knew exactly what kind of person Cecily was. Yet the system notifications were completely biased toward her. These comments were as nonsensical as they could get, so it was better to ignore them.
I stopped paying attention to the system notification and pulled out my phone to draft a text to the school.
Evelyn: I will be suspending my sponsorship of Cecily Hayes immediately.
Halfway through typing, an unfamiliar number flashed on my screen. Staring at the caller ID, a sense of dread washed over me. I picked it up.
"Is this Evelyn Clark? Your father collapsed and has been rushed to the ICU!"
My knees buckled, and I collapsed to the floor... my hands shaking uncontrollably. Without even changing my clothes, I ran to the hospital barefoot. Cold sweat poured down my forehead and dripped from my chin.
When I finally reached the hospital and saw my father in the ICU, hooked up to countless tubes, my heart was instantly squeezed by a cold, tight grip. My fingers gripped the door handle tightly as tears streamed down my face.
The system notifications mocked me relentlessly.
System: See? What did I tell you? That's what you get for not believing me!
Though I was filled with confusion, I went ahead and wrote the recommendation letter for Cecily for the sake of my father's health.
To my surprise, with the full medical team's efforts, my father's condition actually stabilized this time. He was moved to a general ward.
Cecily was incredibly thoughtful, visiting my father every single day. She helped him sit up, brought him meals, and took care of him even more meticulously than I, his own daughter, did.
Watching her bustle about, looking exhausted with dark circles under her eyes, I began to question myself.
Had I really been judging a good person with a cynical mind? Maybe our past conflicts were all just a misunderstanding.
So, I specially prepared a gift for her.
But early the next morning, before I could even step into the ward with the gift in hand, a piercing shriek froze me in my tracks.
"Ah!"
The scream pierced my ears like a knife. It came directly from my father's room. A crowd had already gathered around the doorway.
I pushed through the onlookers and squeezed inside.
Cecily's hair was disheveled, and her collar was torn open, exposing half of her shoulder. Her eyes were red and brimming with tears. My father sat on the hospital bed, looking completely dazed.
"What's going on? What happened?"
Cecily sobbed, looking at me with an expression of pure innocence. "I endured it when you used your sponsorship to blackmail me into being an escort for your business partners. But now, even your father is trying to force himself on me in his hospital bed! Do poor girls not deserve to be treated as human beings?!"
My head buzzed.
In my past life, she had cried to the crowd just like this, accusing me of forcing her to be an escort. In this life, she had actually escalated her scheme to frame my father.
The system notifications popped up right on cue.
System: Mr. Clark is nothing but a dirty old man! That poor girl's purity was ruined just like that! What a sin!
"Bullshit! My father would never do such a thing!"
I shook with rage. What a load of garbage. I couldn't understand why the system notifications in this life were giving me such misleading information. But no matter what, I would never believe them again. Fortunately, I had prepared a backup plan.
The onlookers erupted in anger, and some began filming with their phones.
"Call the police! Lock them up! Let the whole family rot in prison!"
"This old bastard doesn't deserve medical care! Kick him out!"
An agitated man rushed forward, trying to rip out my father's oxygen tube. I tried to stop him, but two burly men held me back firmly. I could only watch in horror as my father's IV line was torn out and his oxygen mask was trampled to pieces. He slumped back against the bed, clutching his chest and gasping heavily for air.
My chest heaved with fury.
Cecily, her eyes swollen like walnuts, knelt before me and cried, "You sponsored my education, but you also used me to secure massive business deals. We're even now. I won't press charges against your father. Just please, stop forcing me to sleep with your clients!"
