As we walked it was hard not to speak to her.
“So, you’re that bastard’s sister? How did that happen?” I asked wincing from the bite to my hip.
Deva giggled a little. “Daejon’s…he didn’t used to be like he is now. He was one kind, and protective, even loving. Now though, I can barely even speak to him without getting growled at. I’m afraid his instincts are taking over.”
Kind of knowing some from Serena, I knew what she was talking about, but I wanted to know everything. So, I acted slightly dumb. “What do you mean?”
Deva sighed a little. “Well, when me and my twin sister Hinda were five, my mother went into a deep depression because of our father, Farlow. He belittled her and used to abuse her all because we came out early and small. Runts. Our father was the mighty Escuro Dire Alpha, and he had two Runts for daughters. He saw it as an embarrassment to his lineage.”
“Wait, I was told Dire’s blood always produced strong healthy pups?” I asked, not meaning to interrupt.
She nodded. “That’s true. But our mother was not his Mate, Daejon’s mom was. Her name was Misty. When he was two Misty died, murdered by our uncle who was jealous of our father. After Misty was gone, Farlow took our mother Layna as his Chosen Mate to rise Daejon. She was never meant to get pregnant, but she did. With twins, and not only did we come out before we should have, we came out small and weak. Runt’s only happen when it’s not the True Mate. The first original Mate that shares the bond.”
I looked to the ground. “Oh…”
“In my mother’s depression…she tried to drown me and my sister in our lake. After rescuing us, Daejon’s wolf took over and slaughtered our mother. When Farlow found out, he beat Daejon so bad…I thought he was going to die, but Daejon’s Dire is so strong. He came out and saved him. When the dust settled, Farlow was dead and Daejon was Alpha.” She said quietly with a distant look in her eyes.
Oh...I…didn’t expect this. I didn’t expect my…him, to have such a hard upbringing. I looked over to her with a reassuring smile to comfort her. “I’m sorry I called him a bastard. How old was he?”
She shook her head. “He was thirteen, and it’s okay. He’s not acting very much like an Alpha right now.”
“My pack doesn’t even have an Alpha, so I don’t know how one would act. By the way, my names Etana.” I said with a true smile this time.
“I’m Deva, and if you see someone like me with short hair, that’s Hinda. Can I ask you something?” When I nodded she continued. “Is it true that you’re my big brother’s Mate?”
I shrugged. “That’s what they keep telling me, but I don’t feel the bond. So, either they are wrong or…idk. Your brother hasn’t said one word of kindness to me since I’ve gotten here. Even if we are, it doesn’t matter. He screamed in my face that I was nothing but a Run-.“
Knowing at the last second what I was about to say was going to be an issue I stopped, but it was too late.
Deva’s eyes watered a little. “What did he call you, Etana? Please tell me.”
I sighed a little “I’m not sure if you really want to hear it, Deva. I mean I know we just met and all, but-“
“Please!” She shouted out before regaining her composure. “Don’t treat me like the rest of the pack does.”
I nodded. “Your brother calls me a Runt. Told me when I first got here that in this pack I was nothing but a Runt.”
The words left my mouth and I instantly felt bad. I watched Deva’s face fall, and then she shrugged.
“Yeah, he seems to like calling people that nowadays.”
Shocked I glanced over at her as we entered the clinic. “Wait, does your won brother call you and your sister Runt?”
Deva put her hands up. “It’s…no big deal.”
Dr. Grange came out and saw me sitting on his exam table and nearly had a heart attack. “Deva, who is this?”
I looked over and smiled a little to him. “I’m the white wolf from a little while ago?”
“Oh!” He said shocked before seeing my wounds. “What happened now? Your nearly all healed up from the thorns.”
“Your Alpha.” Was all I said before letting out a huge sigh.
He dropped his eyes and nodded. “Okay, let’s get them cleaned and then you should heal very quickly.”
Good. I have an Alpha to bother again.
Deva was at my side the whole time, talking to me about anything and everything. She was a young cute girl. Apparently, we were also close to the same age, her and her twin was seventeen. Not to mention what I was gathering, Daejon was really starting to go off the deep end recently. He was doing this completely out of character and even lashing out at his sisters who he loved more than anything. Even told Hinda that he was done looking for his Mate, which wolves NEVER did. We need our Mates, for everything, to be our everything.
The picture they were painting was not a good one. This thriving busy village was on the verge of crumbling down, and I couldn’t help but wonder…could I stop it?
