67 Land Magi

Three days later, Janus was well enough to stand again. Father Galvan still needed to check on him every night to see that nothing was amiss, and there was an astounding amount of herbal brews and potions that the Elders insisted him to drink to speed up his recovery.   The Holy spell had healed him, and it worked like a charm but he still had scars sustained from the burns and the fall had cracked down his bones and moved them in different angles. The healers advised that some focused corrections must be done, and Janus was in no power to disagree.   Chieftess Yashiek sent him three bottles of oils that were in varying colours of green. It had a putrid smell and oozed off hot steam. It did relieve the scarring that he sustained from his burns, which caught most of his face and his chest if you can stomach the smell of fermented fruit and herbs. They had been applying the oils every night, and it did make his skin grow smoother, and the scarring slowly disappeared.   Elder Quairo sent an old masseuse by the name of Birra, who came and check the healing process of his bones. His right knee and left shoulder were severely dislocated from the fall. The masseuse and his assistants carried tapes with measurements and metallic tools that tested the angles of his limbs and spine. She even had a mallet that she would strike on his joints. It felt cold and painful, and that wasn't even the worst of it. After careful measurements on his body, the five of them would then perform a massage that stretched every cartilage and muscle that they deemed out of place. The pain seared across his body, and he would scream like a mad man every night, even louder than when he charged the fiendish Necromancer.   He had heard Bodwin and Dulfo rage on about the greatness of Bhirra's massages after a long day of work. But they were basically doing their own form of chiropractic work that seemingly rearranged his body.   Finally, the Chieftess Kyassa sent him juice drinks mixed with milk and tea to help him with his sleep.   After the ordeal, his body felt light and flexible. His stomach was warm and refreshed, and he slept like a baby.   Master Ringo and Yvaine promised him a light workload on the first day after the healers cleared him to go outside.   Spring was well on its way and the fields were starting to grow lush with produce. When Janus stepped inside his office and library before the break of dawn, his assistants were already hard at work. A stack of papers was piled up in their desks.   Everybody rejoiced and congratulated him for his recovery. They asked him a lot of questions about his ordeal and asked him about his use of magic. They asked if the stories were true, that he quelled the fiend that burned down a huge patch in the village with one masterful spell. Even Dessa seemed to be in high spirits, she prepared the same mixed juice drink that the I'reen prepared for him in his room. They said it was good for digestive purposes and also relieved stress.   Janus was happy to oblige them and address their concerns, but he saw that they were also neck-deep in work.   The Necromancer's attack was one of the more devastating attacks that they had encountered. Especially since it came from within their walls. A large patch of Chieftess Yashiek's territory had to be cleared and rebuilt. Their livelihood and taxes had to be adjusted. Supplies and the workforce had to be moved towards the rehabilitation program.   His classes had to be pushed back. His substitute for the children's class was Ulim -- one of his assistants -- but the students would mostly sleep during the old scholar's class. Only Yvaine was up for the job, but she had classes of her own.   Plus there was the matter of trades and strategies to reach out to the other Kingdoms. Report of Roban's latest trip had arrived saying that the Earl wasn't too happy about her daughter decided to stay for longer, but he was still eager to trade. He also reported that they have cut down the travel time to a day or two at best. Although a tough security escort still needed to be assigned to them. Preferably monster hunters.   That was good news at the very least. Nevertheless, Janus had a ton of work to do.   He flipped through ledgers and orders around camp. He spent five hours just sifting through documents to try and have an overview on how production had been progressing in the territory.   There was one detail that stood out to him.   "Pazua? Deena? What's going on with our produce? Why is there suddenly a high surge of sweet potato orders from every tribe?"   Pazua came over accompanied by Roban's daughter. Who adjusted her spectacles and carried a thick stack of scrolls and receipts with her.   "Ahh yes, your highness. Our crops are all growing as expected, but the sweet potatoes are by far getting the most attention in the whole village."   "How so?" Janus asked.   "Master Sandor's harvest during spring yielded much more than expected. Instead of the normal 100-day or 3-month maturity period, his crops were ready in just 50 days. The Master said they had a way of multiplying beyond his comprehension." Pazua said.   Deena added. "Our supplies might be a lot, but the demand has been crazy over the last few weeks. We had to adjust prices every after 3-4 days because of this. It's been a challenge trying to keep up, and we've done our best to avoid merchants from hoarding the produce. But it's a constant challenge."   "How did this happen? I assume these are regular sweet potatoes?"   Both of his assistants looked at each other. Janus was intrigued.   "Yes, your highness. They're all normal but it's the noodles that are making it more popular. I'm surprised no one has served you the dish yet." Pazua said.   "What dish?"   "Master Rufus found a recipe from one of the books you gave him. He had been developing this sweet potato noodle recipe due to the upsurge of supply. They have been serving the dish at the canteens ever since, and everyone keeps asking for more. All of the Elders have asked for the recipe and they have been serving the same for all the kitchens. I don't blame them, it truly is that good." Deena said.   All of the assistants looked at her and nodded. There were murmurings on how their families looked forward to dinner at the canteens.   "Has anybody checked with Master Sandor on why his potatoes grew to maturity in only half the time?" Janus asked.   Pazua shrugged. "Must be the type of land in his plot."   Janus, still concerned by his latest encounter decided to take note and check it out for later.         # His morning session of classes was uneventful. No one paid attention to lessons, as he was bombarded by questions from everyone on what happened during the final encounter with the monster. They asked him about his newfound affinity for magic. The children were especially in awe, as if it was possible for them to like Lady Haruna more, now she was acting as a teacher to their so-called "hero".   He also had to stomp out some rumours that spread about that agents from Galedon tried to sabotage their village by setting it on fire. If only it were that simple. As soon as he divulged that it was him who summoned the creature out of the depths of the earth the children were even more in awe.   "Can you summon something else? Like a dragon? It would be cool if we had a dragon." Said a dwarf student.   "Can I ride it?" said another.   "No I didn't summon the creature, it was already in the pit and I accidentally----"   "Can I ride it after him?" said another, who was pointing at his classmate.   "Yes, well take turns riding the dragon! Let's make a list." Said another.   "Huzzah!" the children cried.   Janus just sighed and nodded. He knew better than to say anything at this point.   Thankfully, no false circulating rumours were present during their class and meeting with the Elders. Sir Arthan's official account was enough to tide them to the truth. The knight was quick to stomp out any rumours that Lady Haruna had something to do with the creature going around and burning village. She had no reason to fear for her safety at all.   After their class, Janus approached her immediately. She had been rummaging through her notes in the back of the meeting hall.   "We need to check out Mr. Sandor's plot. I've already sent a message to the alchemists. They'll meet us there." Janus said.   "The sweet potato guy? Is there anything wrong with him?" she asked.   "His potatoes are growing faster than normal. We need to check it out."   "Well good for him then, but why do we have to go? I was thinking we can start your lessons at the Blunthammer forge, see if we can test your ability to block fire magic."   "That can wait. If something is wrong on the earth, then we need to take a look. What if we find another one of those creatures underground? I don't want another catastrophe on my hands, not if I can help it."   "Very well then, lead the way." She said.
