Chapter Thirty-Four At the sight of Vorlick’s golden ship, Kriss knew they had lost. Gemfire was heavily armed; Thaylia, though she carried weapons, could not hope to stand against the other ship’s firepower. They could do nothing to stop Vorlick from taking the fortress. He remembered how Rigel had stared up at the sky, and anger filled him. “Rigel,” he spat. “He’s betrayed us.” He glanced at Tevera and could tell by the look of horror on her face that she had already come to that conclusion. “We don’t know that,” Yverras snapped. He touched the comm control on his belt. “Rigel!” he called. “Stay near the trail. If any of Vorlick’s men come along, pick them off. Understood?” No reply. “Rigel?” Still nothing.
