Chapter 12.2: The Grand Ball 2

1456 Words
Anger filled Silas’ chest as he stepped into the event hall where the grand ball would be held. The place was filled with rich pack members, other Alphas who they were allied with, and the families of the Elders, who were practically former Alphas who used to enjoy the power of being leaders. Everyone’s attentions were glued to him. When he became the new Alpha of the pack years ago, he could recall how uncomfortable it was, those attentions that were given to him, especially by the Elders. However, now that he had been leading the pack for almost eight years, he had already got used to it. His expression was cold as he approached his parents. Many hot women turned their heads just to see him, even greeted him to get a little of his attention, but Silas was totally pissed off that he did not mind them at all. He felt like the night was the time of his execution. Klaire and the cheap rogue were nowhere to be found. That only meant one thing: his twin sister was not able to convince his second-chance mate into marrying him for convenience. Before he could even reach the center platform, his father—Hades Jackson—had already approached him first. His old man offered him a proud grin and it was followed by a tap on his shoulder. “I thought the Alpha would not come here to fulfil his responsibility,” said his father, who looked like a king in his golden armor suit, as if he had led a victorious war. Hades Jackson was a proud old man who loved to show off his wealth. He was a powerful primordial werewolf who had earned the respect of so many people. He had won so many wars in the past, conquered a lot of territories, and had killed so many alphas. In fact, those rumors about the Shadow Beast Pack—that they were monsters that eat werewolves after killing them—had all started when his father won a great war even before he was born. It was said that Hades and his warriors roasted the defeated Alpha of his enemy pack, and then ate him. This was something that Silas himself had never had a chance to confirm with his father. They weren’t close to begin with, because they weren’t a normal family either. Silas could only smirk dryly at his father. “I could only imagine the punishment that awaits me if I did not come here.” Hades nodded, as if not denying what Silas had said. “I’m still glad you came. The Elders have been waiting for you. Evelyn and her parents are just on the other side of the hall. Come, we should greet them—” “I think we can skip the pleasantries, father. Let’s proceed with this event and end it as early as possible.” He winced as his eyes roamed around. “I don’t really enjoy the crowd.” His father’s expression turned grim. Still, that didn’t scare Silas at all. He was no longer a child who would tremble whenever his father didn’t like his words and actions. “It’s been a while, Alpha Silas!” a voice of another old man spoke behind him. Silas turned around, only to see Evelyn and her parents approaching them. With his jaw clenching, he managed to strike them a thin smile. “Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln.” Silas slightly bowed his head. “It’s a pleasure to see both of you.” Evelyn’s father, Phobos Lincoln, laughed heartily and patted his arm. “Oh, come on, son. Please cut the formalities. We will become a family sooner.” Silas only offered the old man a smile. Like his father, Phobos Lincoln was also greedy when it came to power. He would do anything just to strengthen his power, one behaviour that Evelyn had inherited from him. “You look so great, Silas,” Evelyn commented in her prim voice. “You should catch up with Evelyn for a bit while the ball hasn’t started,” said his father, who then turned to Evelyn’s parents. “Phobos, Amari, please join me and my wife on our table.” Their parents smiled meaningfully at them right before leaving them alone. Evelyn chuckled as soon as their parents were gone, making Silas turn his attention on her. “Seriously, I thought you were going to ditch this ball,” she stated as she arched her eyebrow. “I wonder what made the Alpha change his mind.” Silas gritted his teeth. Evelyn was really a wicked woman. He would not have the need to marry her if only Klaire exerted more effort to convince the cheap rogue. Now, he had to deal with a bunch of power-hungry werewolves, who would later on use him to their own advantage. “Aren’t you supposed to be happy that I showed myself here?” Evelyn covered her mouth as she chuckled like a decent woman. “You’re making my heart flutter. So what’s going to happen next? Are you going to confess that you really like me and wanted me to become your second wife?” Silas could feel the growl of his wolf inside of him. Ryker never liked Evelyn since then. Even at those times they were still flings... and now, he could feel that his stubborn wolf had gone to loathing the woman to death. ‘What trash pretending to be gold...’ Ryker spoke in his mind. For the sake of ending the night as peacefully as possible, Silas did not leave Evelyn hanging. As they sat on the table, Evelyn never stopped talking about her plans as his future wife, and the new Luna of the pack. Silas did not like to hear any of those and only responded when it was needed. The ball had just started, yet he could feel the strong urge to go back to his house. He bet it was very interesting to talk to a new Omega slave and be pleased afterward, rather than sit with this wicked woman who would become his second wife. Even the thought made his palm twitch. A few minutes passed and some werewolves came to their table to greet them. Some Elders started to congratulate them even if the announcement of their engagement had not happened yet. When the food had finally been served, Hades Jackson went on the stage and Silas knew by then that his father was ready to make the announcement. Swallowing hard, Silas roamed his gaze around. He knew he was already screwed at this point, but deep within he was still hoping that his twin sister would show up to save him. But his insides only ached with indescribable pressure when his father finally started to his speech. Their gaze met afterward, and Silas thought he had to accept such nonsense fate; to marry a wicked woman who wasn’t Cattleya... Cattleya... He could only hope that his late wife would not be disappointed in him. “...and I am here standing in front of all of you to announce proudly that the Alpha of the Shadow Beast Pack—my son, Silas Jackson, will wed the most beautiful she-wolf in North America—” Suddenly, the double doors swung open, making a loud noise that interrupted his father’s speech. The crowd’s attention was drawn by something, and Silas turned his gaze on the doorway to check the situation. A stunning woman walked onto the ball. She caught everyone’s attention, like a diamond shining beautifully. Silas could only gasp as he stood up. His chest tightened, but later on, was filled with hope. His feet moved on their own, walking closer to the woman who appeared to be a breathtaking princess in an instance. Cresia... He could have sworn that his breath hitched upon seeing her in that glacier blue dress. She didn’t look like a cheap rogue anymore, rather an expensive woman who could make men fall to their knees and worship her... “You came,” Silas whispered as soon as he stood in front of her. Cresia could only shrug. “I’m in survival mode.” Silas smiled afterward. He then took her hand and tugged her towards the stage. His father was confused as he looked at them holding hands. Silas then faced the crowd with a proud smile. “I am here to announce that I have found my second chance mate,” Silas announced, making the entire crowd gasp. “This woman right next to me will be the one I will marry and become the next Luna of my pack.”
