Chapter 12: The Grand Ball (1)

Cresia looked up at the round moon through the window that very night. All this time, she believed that the Moon Goddess forsook her, making her experience all kinds of suffering from the hands of Alpha Colton, the man she thought was her brother. But right now, she was having second thoughts about her beliefs because of the good things surrounding her. She was staying in an elegant room with a comfortable bed to sleep on. There was food being served every meal. New clothes were bought for her as well. Those were the things she never had before, not to mention that there was a beast that was willing to take her in. Sure, she hated the fact that a beast became her mate. But if she would gauge the situation she had right now compared to how she lived in the Ferocious Manes, she could never deny that her life here was way more acceptable. Everything that Klaire had told her lingered in her mind. It made her think carefully. Inhaling sharply, she kept looking up at the moon. Deep within, she was asking for some guidance so she could make the right decision for her life. The door to her room opened. She checked over her shoulder to see who had come in. Even if the darkness filled every corner of the room, the silhouette of the man who had just arrived was too familiar, which made her turn her gaze back to the window. "Do you fancy darkness?" The growl in Silas’ voice was evident. Her chest tightened upon hearing his voice. It was too deep and beastly, and it made her tremble. She could never get used to hearing such a monstrous voice. It was rare. "I can’t sleep with the lights on," she said dryly. "I thought you were the type who trembles in the dark." Cresia fought the urge to release a sarcastic laugh. The beast didn’t know what he was saying. She grew up waking and sleeping in the dark. Colton was not very kind to her, and provided a good bedroom for her. Instead, she slept on the cold ground of the basement. It was traumatizing for a child to be locked up in the basement and cry herself to sleep and wake up the next day only to meet darkness again. However, when she grew up, she learned to get used to it. "Other than being your mate, you knew nothing about me." She turned to Silas, tilting her head and looking at him with curiosity. "Darkness is far different than death. That won’t scare me." Silas leaned against the doorframe. His hands were inside his jeans' pockets, still looking over at her with such amusement painted on his glowing pair of wayfarer blue eyes. He was definitely attractive, but looks could be deceiving, as a primordial beast was hiding inside his gorgeous body. Who knows? The beast was only waiting for the right time to eat another prey. "Then you are braver than I thought." "And you are more persistent than I thought..." Cresia crossed her arms and leaned her back against the window. "You sent your twin sister here to convince me to stay here with you." "Did she succeed in convincing you?" "Not quite," she answered directly. "But she told me you need my help since you don’t want to marry the bride candidate your parents found for you, which makes me think you are more of a conventional beast." Silas growled, but that didn’t make Cresia flinch a bit. Klaire told her that a woman from the second strongest pack in North America had been set up for the beast Alpha. Cresia thought it was actually a good arrangement. She did not understand why Silas wanted to ditch the powerful woman over to someone who could not even shift to her wolf form. Could it be that the mate bond was so powerful? "Are you belittling me, little wolf?" The little hint of kindness had gone from Silas’ face. All that was left was cruelty, and the wary look that told Cresia to shut the f**k up before he lost control. "No, I’m just thinking you respect the Moon Goddess so much. That’s why you are choosing a useless mate over a powerful woman," she explained, and then shrugged her shoulders. "Not quite a game." Silas chuckled, but it sounded like a threat to Cresia; a cue for her to stop, and so she closed her mouth and turned her gaze away. "I don’t like the idea that you get all the fun while I’ll get stuck with you, getting nothing in return." "Another opportunist woman." Silas shook his head, clicking his tongue before he continued, "Tell me what you want. Name it all, little wolf." Cresia raised an eyebrow. "I haven’t really decided yet, because you never prove your worth..." Silas growled once again. She bit her lower lip, and smiled. "But I’ll let you know tomorrow during the grand ball. Perhaps by then I will have a long list to ask for in return... just in case I accept the marriage." He narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. Cresia could feel triumphant deep inside of her. It was a good sight to see that the beast Alpha was getting annoyed and challenged, but could not do anything because he needed her. It was like a great opportunity for her to get even after being humiliated and frightened the other night. "Prepare the list. I don’t care how long it is. List down whatever you want, no matter how much it costs. I’ll make you accept this arrangement, anyway," Silas said confidently before he left and locked the door. Cresia shook her head and rolled her eyes. "What a low-tempered beast..." She then looked back at the moon, and seconds later, sighed heavily. "Should I hold on to that beast or die instead?" she asked, as if the moon would answer her question and help her decide what to do at that point. *** The next evening... "You look like a prisoner who will be facing his death," said Klyde, who was watching him as he straightened the coat of the tux he wore for the grand ball. "Try to flash a little smile. This will be a long night." Silas grunted as he looked at his reflection in the mirror. He had yet to hear from Klaire, and he didn’t know whether his twin sister was able to convince the rogue or not. He turned to his Beta with an annoyed look. "Did you hear anything from Klaire?" Klyde shook his head. "She’s nowhere to be found here in the White House either. I suggest you start to accept the reality and act like a grown up, Silas." Silas did not like the tone of his Beta again. He hated it whenever Klyde acted as if he knew how it felt to be in his situation. "Are you telling me that I should follow the Elders like a f*****g robot?" "Not all situations will go your way, Alpha. You have to face the reality that there are times you will need to ignore your beliefs and adjust your thinking for the betterment of many people." "You better stop preaching to me." He offered him a dagger look. Klyde just shrugged his shoulders. "Anyway, your mom told me you had to give that gift to Evelyn later." He then pointed to the box wrapped in red ribbon sitting on the bed. "It’s a family heirloom." "Whatever," Silas hissed, and then walked to the balcony of the guest room to breathe some fresh air. From where he stood, he could see the crowd entering the White House, wearing all their expensive clothes to show off their wealth. He then saw Evelyn and her family walking on the red carpet. Silas felt disgusted to see Evelyn waving her hands to the people who were greeting her, and then accidentally looked up and saw him. The woman smiled widely and waved at him, but all he did was give her a grim expression. He waited a few more minutes, hoping that Klaire would suddenly appear together with the rogue. However, it was almost time for them to go to the grand ball and still no Klaire and Cresia had arrived. At that point, Silas was already feeling a great amount of pressure inside his chest. "It’s time, Alpha." Klyde patted his shoulder. "They are waiting for you." "f**k, I’m going to kill her after this..." Silas said angrily before he left the room in defeat.
