Without words, Cresia’s eyes never left Silas as he tugged her to the center stage. For a brief moment, she forgot how much she despised his kind. Silas was still holding her hand when he squeezed it firmly, and that made her come back to reality.
That was when she realized that they were already standing on the stage, and the crowd, including the highly-ranked leaders behind them, were looking at them in confusion. Swallowing hard, Cresia could feel how the atmosphere immediately changed in the event hall. Her eyes went to the crowd and she saw Klaire on the right corner, leaning her back against the wall while smirking at her.
Her gaze turned to Silas when he cleared his throat. Seconds later, he finally announced that he had found her second-chance mate, whom he wished to marry. The crowd gasped in disbelief, and it was followed by whispers, which made the nervousness in her heart double.
"What is the meaning of this, Silas?" an old man’s voice asked behind them.
When Cresia turned to the owner of the voice, she became anxious. Looking at the eyes of the old man who gave them a questioning stare, she did not have to guess. It was Silas’ father, who appeared to have not likened what Silas had just announced a minute ago.
Silas did not let go of her hand when he turned to his father. "You heard me, father. I found my second-chance mate, and here she is."
The old man looked at Cresia with such distaste in his expression. She could only swallow the lump inside her throat when the old man spoke again.
"Are you saying you’re going to defy my plan and marry someone you just met?" He growled.
Cresia shivered in her direction. In a normal household, the father’s rules were always the most important commandments that children should obey. How much more if he was a former Alpha who wanted to take control of his son to strengthen the pack? That’s how she saw their relationship, and by now she already knew she was in serious trouble.
"You know me, father. I never reject the will of the moon," Silas stated, sticking to his decision while Cresia was almost faltering.
Silas’ father’s eyes smouldered. With the way he breathed heavily, it appeared that Silas had angered him to the core. Cresia looked at the other people on the stage, probably some Elders in the pack, who also looked disappointed at Silas. She could still hear the crowd talking about them until one soft voice of a woman interrupted the heated conversation between Silas and his father.
"I’m not going to accept this humiliation," the woman said as she marched on stage.
"Evelyn, allow me to rectify this situation—"
"I am only going to speak with Silas," the woman, who Cresia figured out as Silas’ fiancée, told his father. Evelyn looked totally mad as hell as she faced Silas. "I thought we have decided to marry each other, Silas. Why are you doing this to me right now?"
"I never agreed to marry you, Evelyn. You only misinterpret my silence," Silas explained in his ever-famous-cold voice.
"I can’t believe this is happening!" Evelyn almost yelled, shaking her head in disbelief before she turned to Cresia and looked at her from head to toe.
Cresia could not help but be insulted by how Evelyn looked at her. Sure, in terms of social status, the woman was ahead of her, but does she have to rub it in her face?
"Have you marked her?" Evelyn asked all of a sudden.
Silas firmly held her hand. Cresia glanced his way and noticed his jaw clenching firmly. It was as if the woman had just cornered him with the most forbidden question.
Evelyn inspected Cresia, as if she was looking for something, and then grinned in satisfaction when she didn’t find what she was looking for.
"No mark on her neck and shoulders. If she was your second-chance mate, why haven’t you claimed her yet?" Evelyn arched her brow.
Everyone, including Silas’ father and the elders, fell into silence and only waited for Silas to answer Evelyn’s question. Cresia sucked in a long breath, thinking that even the beast Alpha could not escape such interrogations from his fiancée. At that point, she regretted what she did—she should’ve stayed in that room and waited for him to throw her away. She should not have listened to Klaire, who wasn’t even on the stage to defend her.
"Answer it, Silas." His father growled angrily. "Evelyn has a point. Why haven’t you marked the girl if she was really your mate?"
"Talk to my wolf and you will know I am not telling a lie, father."
"Then you should be able to answer my simple question, Silas," Evelyn urged him. "Unless this girl is apparently problematic, then that might be the reason why. You see, if she was incapable of becoming your Luna, then you had to set aside the mate bond!"
Desperation. That was the only thing obvious in Evelyn’s voice at the moment. Cresia wondered if it was because of the power and popularity that she could get if Silas married her, the reason why she acted this way. Klaire told Cresia that the woman was just into her social status.
When power is involved, beliefs and morals never come into play...
"I haven’t marked her because we’re waiting for her wolf to be awakened," Silas explained, still with his firm voice, as if no one could ever change his mind. "By then, we will prepare the unification and proceed to the marking."
"That’s insane!" Evelyn hissed in frustration. "Why choose an abnormal werewolf to become your Luna when you can choose me?"
"Son, you must be making an abrupt decision because the mate bond pull is strong. Try to think this out and I beg you not to humiliate our family," his father said through gritted teeth. "Evelyn is the right woman!"
However, Silas did not listen to them anymore. Cresia gasped when he dragged her away from the stage, and then they proceeded to leave the ball without any more words. That completely enraged Evelyn, his parents, and the elders.
"W-Wait up!" Cresia struggled to run in her high heels. "Beast, w-wait!"
They went out of the White House. Silas was gripping her arm tightly as he kept tugging her. Cresia felt the pain in her wrist, and so she shoved his hand away from her.
Silas turned to her, his eyes filled with annoyance and disappointment. As she massaged her hurting wrist, she gave him a deadly glare.
"Now, I’m starting to regret this decision. I know you’re just going to hurt me—"
"This would not have happened if you arrived early. I should have explained the situation well and should not have shocked the entire pack!" Silas snapped out of her.
She could feel how her body tensed up because of the fear upon seeing the beast fueled with anger. But Cresia would never back down. Why the hell did it have to be her fault?
"You’re blaming me because you weren’t able to convince them, aren’t you? You are looking for someone to blame because you failed!"
Silas growled, and all of a sudden his eyes glowed, as if he was ready to shift and attack her. "I swear you wouldn’t want to go there, rogue!"
"And do you think you can silence me by scaring me with your beastly attitude?" Cresia fired back and pushed him forcefully. "If you’re going to blame me because your plan practically failed, then I’d love to back out from your hilarious plan."
"I’m going to kill you—"
"Hey, this isn’t the right time for you to argue," said the familiar voice of Klaire Jackson.
They both turned to her. Klaire was with Klyde, and they walked hurriedly towards them.
"The ball is already cancelled," Klaire stated with a smirk. "Cresia had succeeded in making Evelyn mad as hell."
"Klaire," Klyde called her in a warning tone. "This is not a fun time."
Klaire whistled as she rolled her eyes. On the other hand, Klyde looked at Silas in a serious manner and then said, "Evelyn is making an appeal to the elders. There’s a high chance they will consider it after knowing that your mate is a late bloomer."
"As if that will make me change my decision," Silas grunted.
Cresia gritted her teeth as she looked at him. Well, if his decision hadn’t changed, then hers had! For the record, she could not believe that after doing him a favour, she’d end up receiving the blame if she didn’t do anything wrong. She was a mere accomplice!
"I know it’s not since you’re so stubborn, Silas." Klyde growled lowly. "But Evelyn is persistent. She wants her and this rogue to have a match. Whoever wins will become your wife."
"What the f**k?" Silas growled. "Does she think this is just a game of who’s stronger between them?"
Cresia tried hard not to laugh at the situation. If Evelyn was dying to be the beast’s wife, then she could take that position because she wanted to back out now. However, before she could even voice her change of heart, Klyde spoke once again.
"Evelyn asked for a severe punishment for the rogue once she lost..."
"What?" Her forehead creased. "She wants me to get punished?"
"That’s why we need to start making a plan so you can be ready for that match, Cresia," Klaire stated.
"Match?" she winced. "What is that? Some sort of physical fight or something?"
"No," Silas answered as he massaged his temples.
"Then what?" Cresia frowned.
Klaire and Klyde exchanged meaningful looks, and that confused her more.
"That match though..." Klaire sighed and then looked at her as if she pitied her. "That match requires two people to have their wolves activated. It’s basically a wolf fight."
Cresia’s eyes widened. There was no way she could fight that woman. She had no wolf to begin with! Swallowing hard, she then looked at Silas, but the stubborn Alpha could only stare back at her blankly.
"I know what you’re thinking right now." Klaire snorted. "The match isn’t going to happen until next week if the Elders approve it overnight. So, we are going to have plenty of time to prepare you."
Cresia had no words to say. She only shook her head, as if everything she had heard was complete nonsense...
"And how the hell will I be able to fight that woman?" Cresia hissed. "You know what? I’m just going to give up and let your Alpha marry her, anyway. I am no longer interested in accepting him as my mate. He isn’t worth it..."
She was about to leave them when she heard Silas talking.
"And do you think you’re worth it, huh?" Silas mocked her.
Cresia fisted her hands and could only hope that the Moon Goddess could still pour into her some patience. Silas was really getting on her nerves!
"So, it should be a tie then..." She rolled her eyes and walked away, but Klaire stopped her by holding her arm. "My decision won’t change. I don’t want to marry him."
"No. Hear me out."
"Then speak because I want to leave," Cresia told her firmly.
"The severe punishment Evelyn wants you to receive..." Klaire took a deep breath and continued, "It is your death."
