Chapter 4

The songs from the DJ mix above made the air around buzz with energy, bodies moved on the dance floor, free and in the moment. The ladies who walked in looked sophisticated and well put something i didn't think i could ever achieve, these ladies had the eyes of the men in the club and they knew it. Such confidence was something i envied, i was pretty sure they could tell Ben to go f**k himself if he did anything to upset them they were just like Sam, sure enough her break up with Anthony had devastated her but Sam never let it show when she was out, she had held her head high up like nothing had happened. Something i couldn't do that and that was why i stayed away from guys as much as possible i wasn't as strong as Sam or the other ladies in the club. Ben never wanted me, he had stated it over and over and had forbidden me from calling him ‘father', to him i was a mistake born from a w***e. I wouldn't dispute that, my mother never once took care of me too busy with her flavours of the week. When she had found out she was pregnant with me she had told me it was the worse day of her life, at that time Ben had been her boyfriend for over 6 months so she was pretty sure i was his, the DNA test after my birth confirmed it and that was all. I had parents only in name. I had been shipped to live with her mother. Grandma was the best, i was a responsibility she never expected but she damn well made sure i was comfortable and provided for, there wasn't much but she always made the little the most, she had shown me what it felt like to experience a mother's love. When i finished high school she had contacted Ben to help me through college since I had stated i wanted to go. I have no idea how she talked to Ben but he had agreed and thus i moved to New York. A year into school i got the news she had passed away in her sleep. The old woman had pushed me away because she knew her cancer was back and didn't want me to witness it, she had died alone without me there holding her hands. The news had devastated me to the core, the only person who i loved and loved me was gone. Few days after her funeral Ben had arrived at my dorm door saying if i intended for him to see me through college i had to work at the bar. It was either work whatever hours i gave you or sponsor yourself through college. For a nineteen year old girl who didn't have a dime saved up after the move from Los Angeles i had no choice. “You good?" I turn to spot Jonny all changed to a fresh white shirt. “Yeah. Orders all out" “Thanks Abby. VIP's order are in , you good to take it?" “Sure" The busy night dragged on and by the time we were set to close i was pretty sure i was on the brink of death, my arms ached and my eyes were ready to fall out at any moment. Jonny walks up to where i stood cleaning the last booth. “The tips today sure is something" My stomach drops. They better be more than some spare change or else I'll starve this week. Ben doesn't pay me, i survive off tips. I turn to face him “That bad?" “On the contrary, better than last weeks. The regulars at the VIP sure do like you" I wince “Yeah.... How much i got?" “Give or take 170" I smile “Really?" He chuckles "Really Abby, finish up and pick it up before you leave" “Rodger"
