Red Means You’re Dead Mars is, by and large, a red planet. It’s not red because it’s hot, it’s red because of the soil minerals. In reality, Mars, in true war-like fashion, had created a very inhospitable planet. The temperatures ranged wildly from twenty degrees Celsius to minus sixty-three. The atmosphere was nearly all carbon dioxide and what little water vapour was available condensed to form clouds that swirled around volcanoes bigger than any Earthener had ever seen. Standing so close to the base of just such a dormant volcano, watching the sun rise in a great red-orange display, Jodi knew she was just one polymer-based dome wall away from suffocating on carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere.
