The Distance He Created

363 Words
The change in Lorenzo was subtle at first—so subtle that Aaliyah almost convinced herself she imagined it. He no longer appeared everywhere at once. The quiet presence that once hovered just beyond her awareness retreated, leaving space that felt unfamiliar and strangely hollow. Guards kept their distance. Doors remained unlocked. Schedules were no longer dictated to her. Freedom, given back so easily, felt heavier than captivity ever had. She noticed it most at night. Before, Lorenzo had always checked on her—sometimes with words, sometimes with nothing more than a glance that confirmed she was safe. Now, nights passed without his shadow crossing her doorway. No low voice asking if she needed anything. No unspoken reassurance. “You’re avoiding me,” Aaliyah finally said one evening. They were standing in the long corridor overlooking the sea, moonlight spilling through the tall windows. Lorenzo stood with his back to her, hands clasped behind him, posture rigid. “I’m respecting you,” he replied calmly. “That’s not the same thing.” He turned slowly, his expression controlled, guarded in a way she hadn’t seen before. “You asked for space. I am giving it.” “I asked not to be treated like a possession,” she said. “Not to be erased.” His jaw tightened, the only sign of strain. “You don’t understand how dangerous closeness is for you.” Aaliyah stepped closer. “Or maybe you don’t understand that distance doesn’t make things safer. It just makes them colder.” Silence stretched between them, heavy and unresolved. Lorenzo exhaled slowly. “Every man in my world watches for weakness. Every enemy waits for distraction. You matter too much for me to be careless.” Her chest tightened—not with fear, but something sharper. “So you punish me for being important?” she asked quietly. His gaze softened for half a second before hardening again. “I protect you by removing myself.” That night, Aaliyah lay awake staring at the ceiling, realizing something unsettling. She missed him. Not the power. Not the danger. Him. And that frightened her more than any locked door ever had.
