At The Masquerade Ball

Chapter 5

It has been 3 months since the masquerade party. Lily was still working at the coffee shop. The hoes of her big break was already weaning and was weaning fast. It was a little pass 12pm and it was basically rush hour at the cafe as most businesses would be having their lunch break at this time. Reach cafe was one of the most busy spots in the area. The speakers were on and was playing “Happy by pharrel williams” in a moderate volume, at least loud enough for everyone to hear and enjoy the tunes. “one macchiato coming right up” lily was busy taking orders as her partner at the counter went on to make the coffee. She was going to the back room to get some supplies for the counter when her cell phone rang. James was calling. He wouldn’t call her at this hour unless it was important or an emergency. She decided to take the call at least while in the back room. “Hello. Make it quick i don’t have the luxury of time right now, it’s rush hour” Lily pointed out to James. “Ok. I have something for you.” James said with an unusual giddy in his voice. “So there is an opening in my company for the position of a personal Secretary. I know you said you were tired of these big corporations crushing your dreams every time so i submitted your CV on your behalf. They want to interview you tomorrow” “What?” Lily exclaimed in shock. She didn’t know if to be happy, or be upset that James did this without her consent. But he was just trying to help. “Say you will come for the interview” James nudged “Alright. Ill give it a chance” Lily said. She allowed herself believe maybe this could be it, after all most people claim to have their chance when they least expected it.

Lily left her shift at the coffee shop by 4:30pm. She was on her way home when the thought came to her to go for a makeover before her interview tomorrow. She didn’t have much to get anything fancy done but she had a friend, Celine, who lived not far from her. Celine is a hairdresser, a makeup artist, a nail tech, a lash tech, a masseur. The question was what could Celine not do as regards beauty. Lily arrived home and gave her a call and in 20 mins Celine was already at the door, luckily she had no appointments today. “b***h, I’ve been waiting forever to give you a makeover.” Celine stated as she entered Lily’s apartment. “I thought you would never ask. So what do you want done.” “I want something different with my hair, and maybe some cute little French tips for my nails.” Lily said as she fiddled with her hair in a confused glaze. Celine took the job seriously and did not waste any time at all. After several hours she was done. “Oh my gosh i look like a completely different person” she said in disbelief on how good she was looking. She looked like a completely different person. Celine had dyed her hair brown and cut it short to just rest on her shoulders. She made it a bit wavy too. “Thank you so much Celine” Lily appreciated Celine as she payed her in cash “Nahhh. I don’t do cash no more. Venmo me the amount. People be getting robed a lot this days so i don’t wanna have no money on me except like a few bucks” she said as she was packing up her stuff. Celine left and lily couldn’t help but keep admiring her new look.

It was the morning of the interview and they had requested lily be there by 9am prompt. She arrived 30 mins earlier and was taken to the waiting room by the front desk person. She was nervous. This hasn’t happened to her in a long time, but she couldn’t afford to let it show. She wore a black pant suit with white lapel and loafers for comfort. She got called into the conference room a few minutes past 9am and the interview began. They inquired into her educational background, her work history and also for some reason her personal life, but they didn’t go too far with it. They were not particularly impressed that asides the coffee shop she had only ever worked in one office and for only 2 years. She left the office because the proprietor and the staff had really bad work ethic and she couldn’t take it anymore.

After several talks she was told there that she got the job and would be resuming by Wednesday. She accepted the offer and shook hands with her interviewers who congratulated her. As she was leaving she walked into james. He was shocked to see her new look. “Girl, you look fire.” He said. “Also how did it go?” “I got the job” she told him in excitement. “oh my god... yesssss” James was happy for his friend.
