17. All Just Fine

3516 Words

17 ALL JUST FINE I wake feeling more refreshed than I have in days, despite pain waking me last night several times. After my shower, I put a couple of butterfly bandages over the healing cut on my hand, throw on a threadbare cornflower-blue robe I’ve had since high school, and get coffee started. While it’s brewing, I dry my hair. I bring a mug back to the bedroom to get dressed. Jo texts, and we go back and forth a little. She’s in a hurry today since she has early meetings in Roanoke, so we don’t talk much. Despite feeling so conflicted, it’s so nice to talk to her again that I don’t even mind. Jo does tell me that she has people looking for her father. The reminder that he’s still out there sends a shiver down my spine. When Beatrice knocks, I let the vampire in with a tight smile.
