Chapter 5-WHISPERS BEHIND THE ALMOND TREE

537 Words
The almond tree, once their quiet sanctuary, had become a stage where eyes watched too closely and voices whispered too loudly. It started small , a glance here, a quiet giggle there but by the end of the week, the rumors were everywhere. It was Sonia who noticed first. She was one of the loudest in class, sharp-tongued and quick to spot anything unusual. One afternoon, as Tara and Tyler sat side by side beneath the tree, she caught sight of them and immediately hurried to her friends. “Did you see Tara and Tyler together?” she whispered, a sly smile curling her lips. “Like… not just friends.” The words spilled out, barely a whisper but loud enough. By the next day, the hallways buzzed. “Looks like Tara finally found someone.” “Tyler ’s got a girlfriend?” “Didn’t think he’d be the type.” Tara felt the weight of their eyes like a physical thing, heavy and cold. She tried to shrink into herself, to disappear. At lunch, she sat beneath the almond tree, hoping for the usual peace. But Tyler wasn’t there. When he finally appeared, his usual calm was replaced by something restless. He sat down beside her, but his eyes were dark, troubled. “People are talking,” he said quietly. “They’re saying things about us.” Tara's throat tightened. “What kind of things?” He hesitated, then spoke, voice low. “That you’re trying to change me. That I’m using you. That we’re pretending.” She looked at him, surprised. Those weren’t the rumors she’d heard. “They’re wrong,” she said firmly. “But it hurts,” he admitted. “Hearing people try to make stories out of something real.” Tara reached out, her hand brushing his. “We don’t have to listen,” she said. “We don’t have to explain ourselves.” He looked at her, searching, then nodded slowly. That evening, Tara sat on her bed, journal open. Her pen hovered over the page before she wrote. “Dear you, Rumors spread like wildfire, hot and fast, burning through the quiet we built. I can feel their eyes, their voices, even when they pretend to look away. They don’t see us , just their own stories about us. But what if we stop hiding? What if we’re loud enough to drown out their whispers? Can we be brave enough for that?" The next day, Tara walked the school corridors with a new resolve. Heads turned, whispers followed , but she held her chin high. Beneath the almond tree, Tyler waited, holding something behind his back. When she sat down, he pulled out a folded piece of paper. It was a sketch , two figures sitting side by side, surrounded by swirling winds that tried to pull them apart, but they held firm, hands almost touching. “Maybe the world is loud,” he said softly, “but we can still choose our own quiet.” Tara smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. For the first time, they weren’t just two lost souls seeking silence. They were standing together, ready to face whatever the world threw their way.
