Chapter 6 Just when Avery begins to wonder if Jacob will ever come out, the monsignor’s door opens. Jacob steps out first, Johnny holding his hand. Mrs. Smithson follows behind her sons. She looks exhausted. Avery and his mother rise to their feet. “Well?” He looks from Jacob to Mrs. Smithson and back again. “What happened?” Before Jacob can answer, Johnny tugs on his hand. “Bathroom,” he declares, looking up at his brother. “You promised. You said you’d take me when we got out.” “Come on,” Jacob says. His voice is so soft, Avery can barely hear it. “Take his hand, Johnny.” Johnny’s little fingers slip into Avery’s palm.
