Chapter 1 Jacob lies on Avery’s bed, hands behind his head, and stares at the stucco ceiling. Avery sits at the foot of the bed, his long legs bent up to his chest. He’s leaning back against the side of his closet. Jacob’s bio book is open in his lap. Avery’s roommate sits at his desk, studying. Otherwise Jacob thinks he wouldn’t have to go over his biology again. If Timmy wasn’t here, Jacob thinks maybe he and Avery could be studying each other and not cellular mitosis. He wishes they were in his room. At least then he could kick Mike out. But Avery doesn’t kick Timmy out.
