The morning air in Evervale was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and pine. Ashley sat on the small porch of her rented cottage, sipping coffee, but her mind was elsewhere—trapped in the events of the night before.
Aiden had told her to meet him tonight. That alone sent her thoughts spiraling. The locket, the letter, the way his eyes had darkened when she mentioned the name Eleanor—she was standing on the edge of something big. But the question lingered: Was she ready for the truth?
She had barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the way Aiden had looked at her, like he was torn between warning her and pulling her in closer. She hated how much that unsettled her.
An Uneasy Morning
Walking through town later that day, Ashley couldn’t ignore the shift in atmosphere. People still smiled at her, but the warmth was gone. Conversations hushed when she passed by. A few exchanged knowing glances, as if they were all part of the same unspoken warning: She was asking too many questions.
At the general store, Mr. Whitmore—Aiden’s grandfather—watched her carefully as she approached the counter.
“You’ve been busy,” he said, his voice calm but firm.
Ashley met his gaze. “Just curious.”
He slid a pack of tea toward her but didn’t let go. “Curiosity can be dangerous in a town like this.”
Her fingers tightened around the packet. “So I’ve heard.”
His expression didn’t change. “Then take the advice, Miss Carter. Some stories aren’t meant to be told.”
There was something final in his tone, like a door slowly creaking shut. Ashley left the store with a heavy feeling in her chest.
Aiden’s Change in Demeanor
She spotted Aiden a few hours later outside the old mechanic’s shop. He was leaning against the hood of a dusty pickup truck, staring at the ground, lost in thought.
Ashley approached cautiously. “You look like you just saw a ghost.”
Aiden glanced up, his usual guarded expression in place, but there was something else in his eyes now—hesitation. Guilt.
“I might as well have,” he muttered.
Ashley frowned. “Your grandfather spoke to me.”
Aiden let out a bitter chuckle. “Figured he would.”
She studied him, the tension in his jaw, the way his hands clenched at his sides. “Are you sure you want to show me whatever it is you’re planning to?”
Aiden exhaled, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t know. But I do know that once I do… there’s no turning back.”
Ashley’s pulse quickened. “Then I guess we better make sure it’s worth it.”
The Growing Connection
That night, the town was quieter than usual. The air was thick with the scent of rain that hadn’t yet fallen, and the streetlights cast long shadows across the empty roads.
Ashley met Aiden near the abandoned chapel. He was already there, leaning against the fence, staring at the building as if it held all the answers.
“You came,” he said, his voice softer than before.
She nodded. “Of course.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable—it was charged. A quiet understanding had settled between them, something unspoken but undeniable.
“I wasn’t always going to stay here,” Aiden admitted suddenly. “I had plans to leave. Start over somewhere else.”
Ashley tilted her head. “What stopped you?”
He glanced at her, his gaze lingering. “Some things are harder to walk away from than others.”
Something about the way he said it made her heart beat faster.
The Unspoken Feelings
As the wind picked up, Ashley tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Aiden’s gaze followed the movement, and for a moment, she thought—hoped—he might reach out. But he didn’t. Instead, he let out a breath and turned his attention back to the chapel.
“There’s something I need to show you,” he finally said.
Ashley swallowed hard. “Where?”
He looked at her then, and she swore she saw a flicker of fear in his eyes.
“Follow me.”
And just like that, she knew—tonight, everything would change.
