Chapter 2: The Kind Stranger

373 Words
The next morning, Eliza arrived at the Gilded Spoon still smelling of eggs and dreams. The bell at the door chimed just as she finished straightening the cutlery. A very handsome stranger entered—a tall man in a dark suit with kind eyes and a reserved smile. He walked to a corner table as if he’d been expected, pulling out a thick, leather-bound notebook from his briefcase. Eliza approached with menus. "Good morning, sir. Welcome." He looked up and offered a soft smile. "Good morning. Just coffee for now, thank you. Something strong." "Certainly," she said. She could tell he paid attention to the menu and seemed patient. As she prepared the coffee, he scribbled quietly in the leather notebook—perhaps he was a writer or an architect. When she brought the cup, he clasped it with both hands, savoring the warmth. "This is perfect, thank you," he said quietly. He noticed her name on the apron strap and nodded. "You must be Eliza." She raised an eyebrow. "I'm flattered you noticed," she replied, a friendly challenge in her voice. He laughed lightly. "Everyone pays attention to small details eventually. Are you a student?" The question surprised her. "Not currently," she answered. "Just busy." He sipped his coffee and studied her thoughtfully. "You seem very organized and determined. I believe that one day you'll accomplish something big." Eliza smiled at the compliment. "We all start somewhere, right?" He nodded. "That's true. I'm Julian Locke. It's nice to meet you, Eliza. Keep that intelligence—you’ll go far." Before she could respond, the clatter in the kitchen grew loud, indicating her shift was getting busy. Julian stood, replaced his notebook, and left a generous tip in addition to a note folded under it. Eliza picked up the note when he left. It read, "Trust yourself—wishing you the best. – J." She blushed slightly, tucking the note into her apron pocket. No one, except the people at Gilded Spoon, has ever showed that much interest or believe in her. For the rest of the morning, she couldn't help glancing at the empty corner table where the stranger had sat. Eliza wondered if kindness would find her again in the coming days.
