Chapter 3

"Julianne! The old house in our hometown was forcibly demolished by the people Lucas sent! It was built brick by your father, it’s the only thing I have left to remember him by!" These words were like a knife, stabbing into my heart before I could brace for it. I completely broke down. Bracing against the cramping pain in my lower abdomen, I dialed Lucas’ number with shaking hands. "How dare you have my parents’ house demolished? They were so good to you!" Lucas’s voice was ice-cold, "If I had been one second too late just now, Megan would have killed herself with sleeping pills. Your mom called the school and reported Megan as my mistress. You almost forced two people to death! Now that the old house is gone, that works out perfectly. She can move into the city to live here." After nearly ten years of marriage, I understood what Lucas meant immediately. He wanted to cut off my mom’s options. He wanted to force all of us to live right under his nose, where he could watch our every move. I cried hysterically, "Lucas, why don’t you just go die with her!" He threw out that I was being unreasonable, then hung up the phone. I had just had a miscarriage, and I was still in my post-miscarriage recovery period. Then my mom suffered a heart attack from the shock and was hospitalized. Repeated blows left me in a daze. I opened my phone and made my one hundredth post. I lost my baby, but my husband’s mistress is pregnant. How can I make them pay for what they did? The post went viral. Within a few hours, it reached the top of the social media's trending search. Commenters flooded Lucas’s account to attack him. A: [Total hypocritical scumbag! This pair of shameless animals should just drop dead already!] B: [You’re a rotten, used-up creep. What right do you have to be a teacher? The school should fire him!] Seeing that all netizens were on my side, I felt an unprecedented sense of vindication, and a huge weight lifted from my chest. Then suddenly, a statement was posted from my account. I'm sorry everyone, all one hundred of these posts were made up by me. I am deeply sorry for the distress I have caused my husband and Ms. Megan. I tried to log in to delete it, only to find that the password had already been changed. It was only then that I remembered Lucas had taken away my broken computer. Right after that, he posted on X: My wife developed delusional disorder after she got pregnant. She keeps imagining improper relations between me and my student. For her sake, I have already transferred Ms. Megan to another research group, but she still cannot stop spreading rumors in posts every day. I will have her come out in person to apologize to Ms. Megan. I am very sorry for wasting public resources. I never expected Lucas would stoop to such filthy, unscrupulous means of twisting the truth! Almost instantly, my private DMs flooded with abuse. A: You old hag, if you're sick just go die! You're obviously that type of delusional wife who thinks every woman in the world is after your husband! B: Your baby couldn't be born because this is karma, you old b***h… I was just about to refute when Lucas called me. "Julianne, come to the university tomorrow to apologize to Megan." I was shaking with rage. "What for?!" His voice brimmed with barely suppressed anger, "Megan is innocent. What does your dead child have to do with her? If you don't want your mother's heart surgery to be canceled, you will come to the university immediately and apologize to Megan." My mother treated him like her own son. Yet for Megan's sake, he would actually threaten me with my own mother's life! I squeezed my palms so tight, and bit my lip until it split, before I heard my own trembling voice say, "Okay, I'll do it…" After settling my mom in, I took a taxi to the university. Megan sobbed, hiding in Lucas's arms. When she saw me, she rushed forward and slapped me hard across the face. "Mrs. Lowell, why do you have to ruin me?!" All the surrounding students and faculty were also looking at me with disdain. Straight ahead, someone pulled out their phone and started a live stream. Lucas fixed me with a warning look. "Julianne, apologize." I swallowed the blood in my mouth and was just about to speak, when someone out of nowhere kicked me hard right behind my knee. My knee slammed into the ground, and I fell to my knees right in front of Megan. My clothes were ripped open, exposing the hideous stretch marks on my belly. "It's always ugly people who make trouble out of nothing! You're already in this state, and you still run your dirty mouth to frame me!" Megan exclaimed. "She's so disgusting, I wouldn't even want her if she threw herself at me." Lucas glanced at me with clear embarrassment. I was a disgrace to him. "Julianne, don't think you're wronged. You posted a hundred posts attacking us, and Megan only slapped you once. That's already going easy on you. I've already transferred the money to your bank card. From now on, neither side owes the other anything." I pulled myself up from the ground, and looked at Lucas with red-rimmed eyes. What they owed me can never be repaid. I forced down the raging hatred surging inside me, and rushed back to the hospital to see my mom, only to be told that she had been moved to the ICU. "The patient fell down the stairs. She has intracranial hemorrhage and multiple fractures all over her body, and is currently undergoing emergency treatment," the nurse told me.
