He dashes out through the door and then reappears in the doorway with a huge kitchen knife. Perhaps he has every reason to slaughter my brother Gena, but as far as I’m concerned, I know for certain that I want nothing to do with this whole business. Fortunately, the door with the carpet is close at hand. He chases me through all the rooms and the veranda and only abandons the pursuit out in the yard, when he evidently realises that in freezing conditions like this I won’t get very far with bare feet and wearing nothing but my shirt. My shirt, soaked in sweat and blood, instantly freezes solid. Sinking up to my knees in the snow, I get as far as the fence. Summoning up my final ounces of strength, I climb over it and find myself on the next lot. I don’t know the exact time, but I realise
