Nuriev frowned in annoyance even as he nodded his head in agreement with what he heard — he was far from pleased by the unexpected need to do more work on an article that had already been written. The Rector left the institute at about nine in the evening. The car was there at the curb the moment he stepped out into the street. On receiving instructions to drive to the doctor, Amanulla turned the car round and drove off along an avenue that led uptown. It had been a stressful day, many things had happened — the Rector made himself comfortable on the back seat and set about analysing the decisions taken in the course of the day. A little later, he noticed that Amanulla had driven past the crossroads where he normally turned off the avenue. As if he could sense his boss’s unspoken question
