The oak door of the executive office shattered against the stone wall. Caleb stepped into the room and found Fiona standing behind his massive mahogany desk with a dip pen in her hand. Three clan elders sat on the leather sofas near the window with fresh ink staining their fingers. They were in the middle of drafting a formal decree to strip Caleb of his financial seals.
Fiona dropped the pen on the ledger and glared at him. She turned to the elders and pointed a manicured finger at Caleb.
"Sign the decree immediately and finalize the transfer of power," Fiona ordered. "He won a single duel against an exhausted boy. A level three Qi Realm cultivator does not possess the authority or the martial standing to command the Conway empire in this city."
Elder Vance cleared his throat and avoided making eye contact with Caleb. The older man held up a parchment document bearing the official red wax seal of the clan council.
"The clan laws require a leader with sufficient strength to protect our assets from rival families," Elder Vance said quietly. "Bryce was our designated martial heir. Your victory was unexpected, but the council believes your current cultivation is too low to secure our trade routes. We must appoint a proxy leader until Bryce recovers from his injuries."
Caleb did not raise his voice or summon his golden aura to intimidate the older men. He walked calmly to the center of the room and reached into his inner coat pocket. He pulled out a thick stack of folded parchment documents and tossed them onto the glass table directly in front of the elders.
"You are welcome to strip me of my title," Caleb said. "But you should read the property deeds before you sign your own eviction notices."
Elder Vance picked up the top document and scanned the dense legal text. The color drained from his wrinkled face within seconds. He passed the parchment to the other two elders and watched their expressions mirror his own sudden panic.
"The River Dock Warehouse is the primary storage facility for all Conway exports," Caleb explained. "The agricultural yields on Maple Avenue generate eighty percent of our seasonal income. I purchased those properties two years ago using my personal funds when this council nearly drove us into bankruptcy."
Fiona scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest. "You managed the accounts as a servant of this household. Every single coin you acquired belongs to the Conway clan by default."
"The deeds bear my legal signature," Caleb countered. "The clan owns nothing but the stone walls of this estate and the furniture in this room. If you remove me from this office today, the Conway clan goes bankrupt by tomorrow morning."
The room descended into a suffocating silence. The elders realized they were entirely trapped in a financial web Caleb had spent five years spinning in the dark. They possessed the political power to remove him from the family registry, but doing so would instantly destroy their entire fortune and leave them penniless on the streets.
Elder Vance stood up and tore the draft decree into tiny pieces. He bowed his head respectfully to Caleb.
"There has been a severe misunderstanding regarding the clan laws," Elder Vance stated. "The winner of a formal duel claims absolute authority over the household. We acknowledge your position as the rightful head of the Conway empire."
Fiona opened her mouth to protest the sudden betrayal. Elder Vance raised a hand to silence her before she could form a single word.
"Step away from the desk," the elder commanded her. "You have no authority in this room."
Fiona stared at the elders in utter disbelief. She realized her political leverage was completely gone. She picked up the hem of her dress and stormed out of the office without looking at Caleb. The three elders offered another quiet bow and filed out into the hallway to leave Caleb alone in his reclaimed sanctuary.
Caleb sat in his leather chair and looked out the large window overlooking the courtyard. He had secured his business empire, but he knew the victory was fragile. Bryce was currently recovering in the estate infirmary with shattered ribs. The boy would eventually wake up and send a messenger bird to his private master in the mountains.
A martial master who trained a student to the fifth level of the Qi Realm would never accept a humiliating defeat from a merchant clan. The Harper clan would also scheme in the shadows to retaliate for their public disgrace at the training grounds.
Caleb realized his level three cultivation was entirely insufficient for the coming storms. He needed to break through to the fourth level of the Qi Realm within the week to ensure his survival. His crystalline root possessed an infinite capacity for aura, but the ambient energy in the city was far too thin to support a rapid advancement.
He opened his private iron vault and withdrew a heavy pouch of silver coins. He needed rare medicinal herbs to force a breakthrough. He left the Conway estate and walked toward the Central Exchange in the heart of the mercantile district.
The Central Exchange was a massive stone pavilion filled with shouting merchants and wealthy cultivators. The air smelled strongly of burnt incense and dried lotus leaves. Caleb navigated through the crowded aisles and ignored the stalls selling low grade weapons or common armor. He focused his attention entirely on the merchants dealing in cultivation resources.
He stopped in front of a wide wooden stall displaying ancient texts on velvet cushions. A merchant with a silver beard was currently haggling with a young swordsman over a faded yellow book.
"This is an authentic high tier Yellow class sword manual," the merchant boasted loudly. "The Flowing River Sword Style was excavated from a ruined sect just last month. It guarantees the user a seamless transition between offensive strikes and defensive parries."
Caleb stood near the edge of the stall and looked at the open page displaying the aura circulation diagrams. His golden spirit root pulsed in his chest. His heightened perception simulated the martial art in his mind and immediately identified a catastrophic structural flaw in the technique.
The young swordsman reached for his coin pouch to pay the exorbitant price.
"You should keep your silver," Caleb said casually. "Unless you enjoy coughing up your own blood during combat."
The swordsman paused and looked at Caleb in confusion. The merchant slammed his hand on the table and glared at the sudden interruption.
"Mind your own business," the merchant snapped. "Do not slander my goods just because you lack the coin to purchase them."
Caleb pointed a finger at the third diagram on the open page. "The final stance requires the user to condense aura in the wrist while pivoting the shoulder. The circulation route drawn there forces the energy backward through the lung meridian. Activating that stance in a real fight will rupture your internal blood vessels instantly."
The swordsman pulled his coin pouch away from the table and took a step back. The merchant flushed bright red and reached under the wooden counter for a heavy club.
"You are spouting nonsense to ruin my trade," the merchant yelled. "Get away from my stall before I call the exchange guards."
"He is absolutely correct," a calm female voice stated from the crowd.
A woman stepped up to the stall and examined the open manual. She wore a tailored black tunic over practical combat trousers. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight braid, and a silver crescent moon emblem rested on her collar. Caleb recognized the emblem immediately. It belonged to the Lunar Edge Sect, one of the most powerful external martial factions in the region.
"The fourth meridian pathway is inverted," the woman said to the merchant. "The author of this manual was either incompetent or deliberately trying to sabotage the reader. Selling this text is a strict violation of the Exchange safety protocols."
The merchant paled and quickly pulled the velvet cushion under the counter. He offered no further arguments and began packing up his stall in an absolute panic.
The woman turned her attention to Caleb. Her dark eyes studied him with intense curiosity.
"I am Iris," she said. "Most cultivators in this city rely on brute force and blind memorization. Spotting a meridian inversion just by glancing at a diagram requires a monstrous level of martial perception."
Caleb offered a polite nod. "I am Caleb Conway. I prefer to understand the foundation of a technique before I swing a sword."
Iris crossed her arms and tilted her head slightly. "You are currently at the third level of the Qi Realm, but your aura feels incredibly dense. I suspect you came to the Exchange looking for breakthrough materials."
"The ambient aura in this district is too weak to support my training," Caleb admitted. "I need medicinal herbs to refine my internal pathways."
Iris reached into a small leather pouch attached to her belt. She pulled out a pristine white porcelain vial and held it up to the light. A rich herbal scent leaked through the cork stopper and made Caleb's golden root hum with deep anticipation.
"This is a Jade Condensation Pill," Iris explained. "It contains enough refined energy to push a cultivator directly into the fourth level of the Qi Realm without any lingering side effects. It is not for sale."
Caleb understood the unspoken negotiation tactic. "What do you want in exchange for it?"
"I have been trapped at the peak of the sixth Qi Realm for eight months," Iris said. Her voice carried a trace of genuine frustration. "My sect master claims my foundation is flawless, yet my aura stagnates every time I attempt to break through to the seventh level. I want you to diagnose my bottleneck."
She was taking a massive risk by asking a lower level cultivator for advice. But Iris had witnessed his terrifying perception firsthand and chose to trust her own instincts over conventional martial logic.
"Assume a meditative stance and circulate your core technique," Caleb instructed.
Iris closed her eyes and channeled her aura. A pale blue light coated her skin as her energy flared. Caleb focused his crystalline root and observed the rapid flow of her power. The blue aura moved beautifully through her major meridians but stuttered slightly near the base of her lower spine.
"Your foundation is perfect," Caleb said after a minute of silent observation. "But your breathing rhythm conflicts with your aura circulation. You draw breath when the energy rises and exhale when it settles. You need to invert the cycle. Exhale sharply when you push the aura upward to release the internal pressure on your spine."
Iris opened her eyes and followed his exact instructions. She took a deep breath, channeled her aura upward, and exhaled forcefully. A loud c***k echoed from her spine. The stagnant pale blue light suddenly flared blindingly bright and surged through her body without any further resistance.
She had broken her eight month bottleneck in ten seconds.
Iris stared at her glowing hands in pure shock. She extinguished her aura and tossed the porcelain vial to Caleb. He caught it effortlessly and slipped it into his coat pocket.
"You have a gift that is entirely wasted managing a merchant clan," Iris told him. She unpinned the silver crescent moon emblem from her collar and handed it to Caleb.
"The Lunar Edge Sect is holding a public recruitment tournament at the end of the month," Iris said. "Show that emblem at the gates to bypass the preliminary physical trials. The mortal business world is too small for someone with your perception. I expect to see you there."
Iris turned and disappeared into the crowded market. Caleb looked at the silver emblem resting in his palm. The Conway empire was finally secure under his rule, but Iris was entirely right. A much larger world was waiting for him beyond the city walls.
