Chapter Five: The next day, Leo made the decision to reach out to Lily in the hopes that she could provide information about Amelia's whereabouts. Lily, however, refused to divulge anything, citing Leo's failure to repay her for previous assistance. Leo, understanding his mistake, offered an apology and asked Lily what she desired in return. Lily cleared her throat, her tone shifting to a more serious note. "Leo," she began, "what I want is for us to share a deeper connection, a one-night stand in my bed. I've been longing for that experience with you for quite some time." Leo, taken aback by Lily's request, maintained his loyalty to Amelia. "Lily, you're Amelia's friend, and I can't betray her by engaging in such an intimate act. I value our friendship too much," he responded firmly. Lily paused, realizing the gravity of the situation and the importance of their friendships. Reluctantly, she relented. "I understand. In that case, I will share the secret with you," she said, her voice filled with resignation. "Amelia is six weeks pregnant. She had a one-night stand with a stranger who is now the father of her child." At first, Leo struggled to accept this revelation. He found it hard to believe that the woman he loved could be pregnant with someone else's child. Doubt swirled in his mind until Lily played the last recorded call she had with Amelia, providing the necessary proof. The weight of the news hit Leo like a tidal wave. Shock and sadness washed over him as he comprehended the unexpected turn of events. "I can't believe this," he muttered, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and anger. Leo's emotions overwhelmed him as he grappled with the implications of Amelia's pregnancy. The shock fueled his grief and frustration. However, in that moment, he made a resolve to face the situation head-on and support Amelia through the challenges to come. "Thank you for telling me, Lily," he said, his voice filled with determination. "I won't abandon Amelia in this difficult time. I'll be there for her and our child. They both deserve my love and support." Leo recognized the importance of his commitment and vowed to be there for Amelia, putting aside his initial shock and upset in order to provide her with the stability and care she needed. Lily's smile faded, her words laced with cruel mockery as she addressed Leo. "So, you actually believe you can be a father to a so-called 'bastard child'? Who's to say the real father won't appear later and claim the child?" Leo interrupted, his voice filled with determination. "If it comes to that, I will take this matter to court." Lily burst into laughter, finding his resolve both wise and foolish. "Oh, Leo, you really think you can compete with a billionaire if the actual father happens to be one? Do you have the money to match that?" she taunted. "And what if Amelia refuses to accept you back after you rejected her with all your supposed care?" She sneered, her words stinging with hostility. "Let me enlighten you. As Amelia's friend, I know her better than you ever will. She told me she will never come back to you, no matter how desperately you try," Lily declared with a tone of finality. "Your rejection drove her into the arms of a stranger, who impregnated her and then vanished." Her words hit Leo like a wrecking ball, leaving him wounded and vulnerable. He tried to gather his thoughts, his voice shaking as he responded. "I never wanted to hurt Amelia like this. I made a tremendous mistake, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make amends," Leo pleaded. Lily scoffed, her expression filled with contempt. "Do you truly believe she will forget such a painful memory? The more she dwells on it, the more she'll grow to despise you. She could never accept you back,". Lily's words cut through the air like daggers, leaving Leo frozen in place. The mockery and harshness in her voice hit him unexpectedly, causing a mixture of hurt and anger to well up inside him. But Leo knew he had to keep calm and respond with reason. Leo took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart before speaking up. "Lily, I understand that you may have strong opinions about the situation, but resorting to insults won't solve anything," he said, his voice firm but composed. "It's not about competing with a billionaire or forcing Amelia to accept me. It's about taking responsibility for my actions and being there for Amelia and our child." Lily scoffed, rolling her eyes dismissively. "Taking responsibility? Are you sure you even realize what that means?" she retorted, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "You rejected Amelia when she needed you the most, and now that she's carrying another man's child, you suddenly want to play the knight in shining armor." Leo felt a pang of guilt in his chest, but he kept his composure. "I'll admit, I made a terrible mistake in rejecting Amelia, and I deeply regret it," he admitted honestly. "But that doesn't change the fact that I still love her. I want to make amends and support Amelia through this difficult time. Whether she chooses to accept me back or not, I will take responsibility for my actions as a father." Lily's expression softened slightly, a hint of sympathy crossing her features. "Leo, it's not just about being there financially or as a father," she explained, her voice gentler now. "Amelia's trust in you was shattered, and the pain she feels runs deep. It will take a lot of effort on your part to rebuild that trust, and even then, she may not be ready to accept you back into her life." Leo nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I know that rebuilding trust takes time, and I'm willing to be patient," he said, his voice filled with determination. "I want to prove to Amelia that I've learned from my mistakes and that I'll be there for her and our child, no matter what." Lily sighed, her guard momentarily lowering. "Leo, I hope for Amelia's sake that you're sincere in your words," she said, her tone softened with a tinge of caution. "Please, be patient and hope for a better day. "I... I never thought about it that way," Leo finally replied, his voice filled with a mix of sadness and regret. "But I still love Amelia, and I want to be there for her and our child, no matter the circumstances." Lily shook her head, her expression filled with a mix of sympathy and frustration. "Leo, I know you care about Amelia, but sometimes, love alone isn't enough," she explained. "Amelia feels deeply hurt and rejected by your actions. It's not just about the child's father; it's about trust and emotional wounds that may take time to heal." Leo's heart sank as he took in Lily's words. He had never imagined the depth of pain and resentment his rejection had caused Amelia. The reality hit him hard, and he felt a sense of overwhelming helplessness. "I never wanted to hurt Amelia like this," Leo whispered, his voice filled with remorse. "I never meant to push her away; I just made a terrible mistake." Lily's expression softened, and she walked closer to Leo, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Leo, I believe you genuinely care for Amelia, and that's why I'm telling you all this," she said kindly. "But now, it's essential to give Amelia the space she needs to process her emotions. Rushing back into her life might do more harm than good." Leo nodded, his gaze clouded with sadness. "I understand. I just hope she can find it in her heart to forgive me one day," he murmured softly. Lily gave him a reassuring smile. "Time has a way of healing wounds, and only Amelia knows what the future holds," she said. "Focus on being there for her as a friend, offering support and understanding. Let her decide if she's ready to let you back into her life." With those words of advice, Lily bid Leo goodbye, leaving him alone to reflect on their conversation. He knew that rebuilding the trust he had lost would be a difficult journey, but he was determined to do whatever it took to mend their fractured relationship and support Amelia as she faced the challenges ahead.
