“I guess I don’t really approve of killing animals.”
“Except for chicken and fish.”
“No, I don’t really approve of killing them either. But I do enjoy the taste.”
“And that contradiction doesn’t worry you, at all?”
“No, I’m good with it. You?”
“Hey, if it works for you then it works for me.”
The waitress returned with their drinks. “Would you like to hear the specials?”
“No, thank you,” Isaac replied. “I think we’re ready to order.”
“I’ll have the chicken,” said Bailey.
“And I’ll have the fish,” said Isaac. “We’re vegetarian, you see.”
The teenager’s polite smile told Isaac that the comment wasn’t nearly as funny as he had thought it was going to be. She scribbled down the orders. “Your meals will be out shortly,” she said, with scrupulous indifference.
