CHAPTER 5: The First Rule You Broke

1070 Words
The hallway felt longer this time. Quieter. Heavier. Every step I took echoed softly against the polished floor, my heart matching the rhythm. “Madam, this way,” the maid said gently, stopping in front of a set of double doors. She knocked once. “Enter.” His voice. Calm. Controlled. The same way it always sounded but something about it tonight felt… sharper. The door opened. I stepped inside. And immediately felt the shift. This wasn’t a bedroom. It was his office. Dark wood. Low lighting. Floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with files and books. A large desk stood at the center, and behind it Him. Seated. Watching me. The door closed behind me with a soft click. “Sit,” he said. No greeting. No small talk. I walked forward and sat across from him, trying not to show the slight tension building in my chest. “You called for me.” “I did.” Silence stretched between us. Uncomfortable. Deliberate. Then he leaned back slightly, studying me like I was something he was trying to figure out. “Do you know why?” “No.” A pause. Then “You learn fast,” he said. “That’s good.” My brows furrowed slightly. “I’m not sure what that means.” “It means,” he continued, his gaze steady, “you didn’t ask unnecessary questions downstairs. You followed instructions. You observed.” I blinked. That’s what this was about? An evaluation? “I’m not here to impress you,” I said quietly. “No,” he agreed. “You’re here to represent me.” The words landed cold. Clear. This wasn’t a partnership. It was a role. “And right now,” he added, his voice dropping slightly, “you’re already being watched.” My stomach tightened. “What do you mean?” He reached forward, sliding a tablet across the desk toward me. “Look.” I hesitated for a second… then picked it up. My breath caught. News headlines. Pictures. Videos. From the wedding. From the moment he proposed. From the kiss. It was everywhere. “Billionaire Marries Abandoned Bride.” “Mystery Woman Becomes Mrs. Blackwood Overnight.” “Scandal Wedding Shocks Elite Society.” My fingers tightened around the tablet. This wasn’t just gossip. This was exposure. “You’re trending,” he said calmly. “Which means people are interested.” I looked up at him. “And that’s a problem?” “It depends on how you handle it.” He stood up slowly, walking around the desk. Each step measured. Controlled. “From now on,” he continued, stopping in front of me, “everything you do reflects on me.” I held his gaze. “I understand that.” “Do you?” he asked. His eyes sharpened slightly. “Because attention invites investigation.” A pause. “And investigation uncovers things.” My heartbeat picked up. “Like what?” I asked. His gaze didn’t waver. “Your past.” Silence. Heavy. Uncomfortable. My fingers tightened slightly on the edge of the tablet. “There’s nothing in my past,” I said. “Everyone has something,” he replied calmly. The way he said it… Like it wasn’t a question. Like it was a fact. I stood up slowly, meeting him at eye level. “Then you should have done your research before marrying me,” I said. A dangerous line. I knew it the moment I said it. But I didn’t take it back. For a second Just one second Something shifted in his expression. Not anger. Not exactly. Something… darker. Then it was gone. “I did,” he said quietly. My breath caught. “And?” I asked. A pause. Then he stepped closer. Too close. “You’re clean,” he said. Relief flickered through me Until he added— “Which is exactly why I chose you.” Something about that didn’t sit right. “Explain.” “You don’t have connections,” he said. “No powerful backing. No complicated history. No one pulling your strings.” His voice dropped slightly. “That makes you predictable.” Predictable. The word hit harder than I expected. I folded my arms slightly. “You seem very confident about that.” “I don’t deal in uncertainty,” he replied. Silence stretched again. But this time It wasn’t empty. It was charged. “You said I broke a rule,” I said finally. “Which one?” His gaze flickered slightly. Then he reached out And gently tilted my chin upward. The contact was light. Controlled. But it sent a strange tension through me. “You didn’t,” he said. My brows pulled together. “Then why—” “You almost did.” My breath slowed. “How?” His eyes held mine. “For a moment,” he said quietly, “you forgot this isn’t real.” My heart skipped. “I didn’t—” “You looked at me,” he interrupted softly, “like it was.” Silence. My chest tightened. That moment. The kiss. The way everything felt “No,” I said, pulling back slightly. “I didn’t forget.” A lie. And I knew he could see it. But he didn’t call me out. Instead, he stepped back. Creating distance again. “Good,” he said. “Because emotions complicate things.” His tone was final. Closed. “Get some rest,” he added. “Tomorrow, your new life begins.” I stood there for a moment. Processing. Watching him return to his desk like the conversation was over. Like I was dismissed. I turned toward the door. But just as my hand touched the handle “Mrs. Blackwood.” I paused. Didn’t turn immediately. “Yes?” A brief silence. Then “Don’t make the mistake of trusting me.” My grip tightened slightly on the door. I glanced back. “Was that a warning?” I asked. His expression didn’t change. “It’s advice.” I held his gaze for a second longer. Then opened the door. And walked out. But his words followed me down the hallway Echoing in my mind. Don’t trust him. Too late for that. Because whether I liked it or not I had already stepped into his world. And something told me… Getting out wouldn’t be as easy as signing a contract.
