The whole house feels different with Jacob away on business. It’s like everyone can tell that he’s not here and they’re making the most of the atmosphere change. It’s not like any of us can do anything that will get us into trouble when he returns, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t small things that have changed. Like the pomegranate juice that the cook has sent with my meal. It’s not a luxury I’d ever get otherwise, but it’s a welcome gesture from a woman I barely know. I glance towards the door, half-wishing it wasn’t locked so I could run away from here and put an end to the torturous existence caused by Jacob and the prison he’s created in this house.
