Chapter 8My daughter slept like a log, wandering bleary eyed into the cabin well after I had awakened. After a breakfast of two fresh-laid eggs, over easy, and pan-fried tomatoes, I took Claire up the road to the general’s home. The former visitor center was a grand log cabin. There was a sentry at the door, I noticed it was the red-haired girl from the day before, Jess. She nodded at Claire, and my daughter nodded in return, but I noticed her eyes linger on the pearl-handled pistols crisscrossing Jess’ hips. I pushed her through the open cabin door where we were greeted by the general’s wife, Greta. Greta was a plump blonde woman, with gorgeous hazel eyes. She had a baby on her hip, and a toddler trailing behind, a small stuffed bunny dangling from their arm. “Welcome, ladies.” she said
