Chapter 10I was wrapping up my second class as Fort Snow’s new educator. It was an hour or so earlier than usual and I encouraged them to get out and enjoy the last of the warm weather we were having. One little girl, Kayla, squealed with delight. I followed her gaze to see the young woman known as the captain striding toward us. She was wearing a loose cotton shirt, the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, revealing her tanned forearms. There was some sort of indigenous amulet around her neck and her hair was done up in a loose braid and covered by a floppy old cowboy hat. She wore her jeans tucked into worn but polished brown leather boots, and a gun belt with two shining pistols hung on her hips, looking completely in place—almost as if she’d been born wearing them.
