_________________ . . . Three weeks later, June was surprised to find George waiting for her in the office, his expression unreadable. "June, can I have a word?" he asked, his tone formal. Her heart skipped a beat as she followed him into Heath's office. "What's going on?" she asked, trying to keep the tremor out of her voice. Had he found out? Had he found out about her and Heath? These thoughts raced through June's mind as she stepped into the office. George's expression was stoic as he sat down on Heath's seat. He gestured for her to sit, his eyes never leaving hers. "I've been watching you, June," George began, his voice measured. "You're good. Really good." June's stomach flipped as she sat down across from him, her hands clenched in her lap. "Thank you," she managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper. "You've proven yourself invaluable to Heath, and I can see why," George said, his gaze intense. "But I need someone I can trust by my side, too." June's heart thudded in her chest. Was he about to make a move on her? Was this a trap? "I've noticed how well you handle Heath," George continued, his eyes piercing through her. "But, I believe you are made for greater things. You should not slave away as just the PA of a immature and tardy CEO." George looked at the time. Of course, Heath was late as usual. "I don't understand what you are trying to say." She rasped out. "Work for me." George went straight to the point. "I am being appointed Vice Chairperson and I would like you to be my PA." June stared at him, her mind racing. "What about Heath?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. George leaned forward, his eyes boring into hers. "What about him?" June's mind raced. "Heath," she whispered, her voice shaky. "What will he say?" George's eyes never left hers. "It's your decision, June," he said, his voice firm. "You know what you're worth. Don't let his...distractions hold you back." June felt a jolt of fear. Did George know about her and Heath? But his tone was more business-like than accusatory. "What makes you think I'd be a good fit for your team?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "Your dedication, your professionalism, and your ability to manage chaos," George replied, his eyes never leaving hers. "And let's not forget, your discretion." June felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. Did George know about the affair? She had to keep her composure. "Thank you for the offer," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "But I'm happy working with Heath." George leaned back in his chair, studying her intently. "Are you?" he asked, his tone mild. "Because it seems to me like you're carrying the weight of this company on your shoulders while he's off doing who knows what." June's heart was racing. She had to get out of this conversation. "I'm happy with my current role," she said, her voice firm. But George wasn't done. He got up from the chair and crossed to her side, leaning down, their face inches apart. "I know you're capable of more," he said, his eyes searching hers. "And I know you want more." June's heart hammered in her chest as George's hand reached out to touch her cheek, his thumb brushing over her lower lip. "What are you doing?" she asked, her voice a tremor. "I just want to show you what you've been missing," George murmured, his breath warm against her face. June's eyes widened in shock as George's hand cupped her cheek, his thumb tracing the outline of her mouth. She didn't see this coming. "I'm sorry, but I'm not interested," she managed to say, her voice shakier than she would have liked. George's hand didn't move. "Why?" he asked, his voice low and insistent. "Is it because of him?" June's eyes snapped to his, her cheeks flushing with a mix of anger and embarrassment. "It's none of your business," she said, her voice firm. But George didn't back down. He leaned in closer, his hand moving to the back of her neck, and before she could react, his lips were on hers. June's eyes widened in shock, her body going rigid. This was not the George she knew, not the kind, considerate man who had always treated her with respect. This was a side of him she had never seen before. The door to the office flew open, and in stormed Heath, his eyes immediately drawn to the intimate scene before him. "What the f**k is going on here?" he roared, his face red with rage. June's eyes snapped to the door where Heath stood, his fists clenched at his sides. His eyes were narrowed and his jaw was set in a hard line. He looked like a bull ready to charge. Her first instinct was to push George away, but she was frozen in place, her mind racing. Heath's roar snapped her back to reality, and she shoved George back with all her might. "What the hell are you doing?" she spat, her eyes wide with shock and anger. George stumbled back, his handsome face twisted into a snarl. "What's the matter, sweetheart?" he sneered. "Couldn't handle a little competition?" June's cheeks burned with a mix of anger and humiliation. She had never seen this side of George before. "How could you?" Heath's voice was low and dangerous. "You're mine." June's eyes snapped to him, the shock on her face morphing into anger. "What are you talking about?" she spat, her voice shaking. "I'm not anyone's property, Heath." But Heath was beyond reasoning. His eyes were dark with jealousy, his mind made up. "You're fired," he said, his voice cold. "Get out." The words hung in the air like a punch to the gut. June couldn't believe what she was hearing. "What?" she gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You heard me," Heath said, his voice low and deadly. "You're fired." June stared at him, her heart racing. "What are you talking about?" she whispered, her eyes filling with tears. "I didn't do anything." But Heath was too lost in his anger to listen. "Get out," he repeated, his voice echoing through the room. "You're fired. You're not welcome here anymore." June felt the world crumbling around her. "What about the company?" she managed to ask, her voice trembling. "What about our...?" Heath cut her off with a cold laugh. "The company is fine," he said, his eyes blazing with anger. "It's you and your f*****g loyalty I can't trust." June stared at him in disbelief. "Heath," she whispered, "I didn't... it's not what it looked like." But Heath was unmoved, his eyes like chips of ice. "Get out," he repeated. "I don't want to see you again." June's world shattered into a million pieces. She couldn't believe that this was happening. But she had to get out of there, had to breathe, had to think. She stumbled out of the office, tears blurring her vision. As she made her way through the stunned employees, George followed her, a smug smile playing on his lips. "June," he called out, his voice smooth and calculated. "Don't worry, I'll take care of you." June whipped around, her eyes flashing with anger. "What did you do?" she hissed, her voice barely above a whisper. George's smile grew wider, his eyes gleaming with triumph. "What needed to be done," he said, his voice smug. "You're mine now." June felt sick to her stomach. "What have you done?" she whispered, her eyes wide with horror. George shrugged, his smile not reaching his eyes. "It's just business," he said, his voice cold. "You're a valuable asset, and I've always had my eye on you." "I am not some property." George shook his head. "Call me when you have calmed down." And without another world, he was gone after setting fire to her life. . . . __________________
