“I have a feeling today will be exciting.” Leo said that Thursday afternoon as we dropped Imogen over at Rachel's.
“Don't get your hopes high.” I simply replied plainly.
“Oh believe me, my hopes are already at their highest,” he was leaning against the doorway, hands pocketed and a sheepish smile on, “I even had Evan clear my schedule for the day.”
“You had better tell me every single thing that happens.” Rachel walked over, and the three of us left to my car.
All I did was roll my eyes.
When I told Leo about meeting my dad and his board members, he had been thrilled. He even insisted on tagging along, ‘I'm definitely not missing the drama bound to happen.’ Those were his exact words.
I just shook my head when he said it. Either way, here we where, getting inside the car with a guard in the driver's seat.
“Please help take care of Imogen.” I said to Rachel, and she nodded.
“Yeah yeah, you just have fun.”
Fun?
The car roared to life, and zoomed off.
How was I to have fun when I was going to be meeting a man I wanted nothing to do with.
There was nothing exciting about the day, and if it wasn't for my grandfather, then I would never be doing such.
“Are you nervous?” Leo asked when the car came to a halt in front of the DRX Company.
I thought about the question as a guard opened the door, and we both got out.
“No.” I replied, when he appeared beside me. “Not at all.”
“Impressive.”
And like that, we both made our way into the company, a guard following behind.
Heads bowed upon our arrival. Some took the time to do a second glance like they were shocked to see me here.
Well that makes two of us.
A female worker headed over with a warm smile. “Welcome, Miss Red. The board members are ready to meet with you, ma'am.”
“Okay.”
“Please, follow me and I'll take you to the conference room.”
I hated how even before she started walking, my brain reminded me of where the room was.
It had been five years already, but I didn't forget one part of this building.
Still, I let her lead me to the conference room.
The moment I pushed the door open and each click of my heels announced my presence… every single member of the board stood.
There were ten people there, but my eyes fell on the man at the head of the table.
David didn't return my gaze, head down in shame.
Trish was at the first chair by his right, Cassie beside her, and a deep frown landed on both their faces.
The two looked way older than the last time I saw them, and their heavy makeup only worsened it.
“Wait, what the hell is she doing here?” Cassie snapped, breath growing sharp. “I thought you said we'll be meeting the CEO of TEAm. Why is she here? What the f**k? I thought she was dead!”
Trish turned to her husband. “Did you know she was coming? Did she beg you to take her back and you stupidly agreed?”
Everyone just stood there, watching the scene, which only amazed me. Even after five years, no one could talk back at them.
Wow.
“We don't pick up stray dogs, Lisa, so you—”
“Alright, that's enough.” I cut her off, my voice calm and composed, while her frown deepened.
“Watch your mouth, young lady. Your father…”
“Trish, please.” David didn't raise his head, and his tone was just as much. “I… I know I should have talked to you about this, but-but there just wasn't time.”
“So? So you thought the best thing to do was bring her over to a board meeting?” She snapped. “You couldn't have kept her home till we got back and figured out what to do with her.”
When I stared at Leo, he had an amused smirk on. He'd definitely be enjoying this.
“I don't care whatever s**t’s going on with you two,” Cassie scoffed, “but there's no way I'll sit in the same room as this filth, so she had better leave.”
At that point, I knew I had had enough.
Just when I wanted to speak, Henry stepped in. “Pardon my interruption, but I think what Mr Red is trying to say is that Miss Red is not here as his daughter, but she is in fact the CEO of TEAm International.”
The two froze.
For a second, they looked like they forgot how to speak, before both shook their heads like it was the most absurd thing anyone's ever said.
“Tha-That’s not possible.” Cassie stammered, staring at me with a shock that made it hard to not smirk.
Trish's eyes ran through my appearance like she was just noticing it, and she gasped. “What the hell?”
“And that's not all,” Henry continued, “Mr Red has decided to step down, which means Miss Red will be taking over from this day on.”
Both lost all forms of color.
“No.” Trish muttered, her hand flying to her chest. “This is… This can't be.”
“Believe it or not Trish, but this is reality.” I stepped over to where David was, and he didn't even stare at me.
“You have ruled this place for as long as I can remember.” I said, although the words were mostly directed to Trish. “The time has come for me to put an end to it.”
She shook her head, clearly in disbelief. “No.”
“This company, its employees and every partnering company answers to me from today.”
She didn't stop shaking her head, so I met her gaze when I added, “Including its finances.”
“No!” Her hand moved to her hair, urgent eyes directed at David. “You can't do this to me. Not her. Not her!”
“He—” whatever he wanted to say was interrupted by the door pushing open.
“Sorry I'm late.” That familiar voice made me turn.
And there, walking in was Drex.
Oh s**t, I totally forgot he was a partnering company as well.
He paused when he noticed me, and something shifted his expression.
Our eyes met, but neither did anything.
And just when he looked like he was going to talk, Cassie rushed over to him.
“Baby, you won't believe what's happening.”
That was enough to snap me to my senses.
