“Sir? Where are you going? Sir.” Finn was trying to catch up as I started towards Lisa, shoulders squared, jaw locked, my eyes unable to leave the boy. He looked older… Or maybe I just wanted him to be. Because I knew if he was five, then I might be the father. That was something I knew I had to ask. One of the guards was about to stop me, when I raised a hand, staring over his shoulder. “Lisa, we need to talk.” My voice was sharp and final. When she turned, there was a frown on her face. “Excuse me?” Some of the people around stopped to stare, some photographers even had their cameras flashed in our direction like they knew this moment could be a juicy one. “I want to talk to you.” I glanced around, before adding, “in private.” For a second, she looked stunned. Then she started towards me. With each click of her heel to the ground, someone fell silent. More eyes dragged to us. Some people scurried over. I even noticed us on the big screen. If there was one thing I hated, it was being the source of attention. But Lisa… She didn't look the least bit affected as she stopped in front of me. “You don't get to tell me what to do, Drex. You're lucky I gave you the chance to speak to me once,” she said, voice low, but eerie, “don't mistake it for closeness.” Mistake? A crease formed between my brows. “I don't understand what you're doing, but I have to talk to you.” She held my gaze, arms crossed over her chest like she was considering if I was worth her time. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she nodded. Once. “Two minutes.” “What?” “You have two minutes to say whatever you want.” “Wha—?” My face scrunched. The camera flashes only increased, same with my frown. This woman was nothing like the Lisa I knew. “Can we at least talk somewhere else?” She offered the crowd a half glance, before her gaze returned to me. “I don't see a problem here.” I had to draw in a breath, because if this boy was really my son, then the last thing I'd want to do was ask in front of the media. “Let's meet somewhere else.” I said in a lower voice. “I don't want to discuss it here, so we'll meet outside after the event is over, okay?” She stared at me for an extra second, before the side of her lips hitched up and she made a sound. Something that was like an amused chortle. She just turned, took the boy's hand and strutted away, her guards following. All I had to hope was that she'd actually heed. – Lisa Red – “What just happened?” Rachel asked as she rushed over to my table. “Wasn't that Drex? Like, really Drex.” “Yup. It's him.” “Wow.” She breathed out. “I didn't think he still lives here, did you?” I nodded once, and she frowned. “Wait, if you knew, why did you accept the job offer then? Why would you want to return to a place when you knew he still lives here? He broke your freaking heart for crying out loud.” Her questioning was understandable, but one thing Rachel didn't understand was that I didn't care. Five years ago, Drex had treated me like trash. And now… Now that I had gathered a name for myself, there was no one —especially not him— that would make me feel the need to hide. I wasn't going to stop any business deal just because I was trying to avoid him. Or prove a point. “Hey, are you even listening?” Rachel asked, pulling me out of my thoughts. I shook my head. “Sorry, I wasn't. What were you saying.” Rachel sighed loudly. “I asked what Drex was talking about. You two seemed in a pretty tense conversation.” “Yeah, he just wanted to talk.” I lifted a glass of wine from the table. “Do you know why?” Of course I knew why. “He must have seen Rick. He probably thinks Rick is my child.” “What?” She stared at her son who was now drumming on the table. “But he's just three. How can she think he's his?” “Because that's what he wants to.” I took a sip of the wine. “He's even asked me to meet him.” She leaned forward. “The way you say it makes me think you're not going to see him.” “I don't have a reason to.” If it wasn't business deal, then it wasn't worth my time. “You sure?” “Yes, I have a lot more to handle than to waste a second on him,” I waved a hand, gesturing to my secretary to come. Irea rushed over, her tab in hand. “Tell me, what's my schedule for tomorrow?” I asked. “Uh, you have a meeting by ten a.m, and you have to discuss with the board members by twelve, then the rest are works that need attending. That's about it, ma'am.” I nodded. “I'll not be available by one, so add it to my schedule.” “Okay ma'am.” Rachel looked like she was going to ask where I was going, but knew better than to. Instead, she leaned closer to whisper. “Where are you going?” Rachel asked, “Are you sure you don't want to meet with Drex?” I frowned. “Why are you asking?” “I don't know. Maybe I'm just curious.” Curious? “Curiosity doesn't get you anywhere, Rachel.” I took another sip, before adding, “Don't be.”
