For a while, Lily felt as though she could breathe properly; she forgot all about Leon, his cheating ways with Mia, and how draining his mother's demands for perfection and high expectations were. She forgot about her mother siding with the Hartleys and making her feel she wasn’t enough. Just being here in the open air with Adam made her feel good; she could not remember the last time that she had laughed so much. It was just like the old days back at university.
“How about some lemonade?” Adam handed her a glass; their fingers brushed for a moment, causing Lily to gasp. Adam smiled — that familiar smile that used to make her stomach do a funny flip, and her heart beat faster. Lily swallowed hard and met his gaze. She smiled shyly and thanked him for the drink.
