CHAPTER FIVE
The black car sped through the empty streets, its headlights cutting through the darkness.
Elena sat silently beside Alexander.
Her fingers were wrapped tightly around the tiny golden key hanging from her neck.
She couldn't stop thinking about her mother.
She was alive.
After twelve years of believing she was gone, Elena finally had proof.
But that proof came with a terrifying price.
Her mother's life.
“Alexander.”
He kept his eyes on the road.
“Yes?”
“Tell me everything you know.”
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“About what?”
“My father. The trust. The key. My mother. Everything.”
Alexander remained silent for several seconds.
“I don't know everything.”
“But you know more than I do.”
“Yes.”
“Then start talking.”
He glanced at her.
“Your father wasn't an ordinary businessman.”
“I know.”
“He was one of the founders of the Blackwood Trust.”
Elena frowned.
“I thought the trust belonged to your family.”
“That is what everyone believes.”
“Then what is the truth?”
Alexander's expression became serious.
“The trust was created by three powerful families.”
“Which families?”
“The Carters, the Blacks, and the Blackwoods.”
Elena stared at him.
“That still doesn't explain anything.”
“It will.”
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
He handed it to her.
Elena opened it.
Her eyes widened.
It was an old agreement bearing her father's signature.
At the bottom were two other signatures.
One belonged to Victor Black.
The other belonged to a man whose name Elena had never seen before.
Adrian Blackwood.
“Adrian?”
Alexander nodded.
“My father's greatest enemy.”
“Then why would they create a trust together?”
“They weren't enemies back then.”
“What happened?”
“Money.”
Elena shook her head.
“Money can't explain everything.”
“In our world, it explains more than you think.”
She looked down at the document again.
“What happened to Adrian?”
“He disappeared.”
“When?”
“Twenty years ago.”
“Was he declared dead?”
Alexander hesitated.
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“Then why does everyone act as if he's dead?”
“Because it was safer that way.”
“For whom?”
Alexander didn't answer.
The car suddenly slowed.
Elena looked through the window.
They had arrived at an abandoned industrial district.
A huge warehouse stood at the end of the road.
Rust covered its metal walls. Several windows were broken, and weeds had grown around the entrance.
Elena stared at it.
“This is the place?”
Alexander nodded.
“Your father owned it.”
She stepped out of the car.
A cold wind blew through her hair.
Alexander joined her.
“Stay close to me.”
They walked toward the entrance.
Elena suddenly stopped.
There was a symbol scratched into the metal door.
Her heart skipped.
She knew that symbol.
It was identical to the one engraved on her golden key.
“Alexander.”
He looked at the door.
“That wasn't there before.”
“You've been here before?”
“Once.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Elena's expression changed.
“Three years ago?”
“The night before our wedding.”
She stared at him.
“You came here instead of coming to the rehearsal dinner.”
Alexander looked away.
“I was looking for your father.”
“Why?”
“He warned me not to marry you.”
Elena's heart sank.
“My father did?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He told me that marrying you would put a target on your back.”
She stared at him.
“And you believed him?”
“I had evidence.”
“What evidence?”
Alexander reached for the door.
“This.”
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Darkness swallowed them.
Alexander turned on his flashlight.
The warehouse was filled with old crates, dusty files, broken furniture and abandoned machinery.
Elena moved slowly through the room.
“This place looks like nobody has been here for years.”
“That's the point.”
They reached a large wooden desk.
Alexander searched through the drawers.
Nothing.
Elena noticed something beneath the desk.
A photograph.
She picked it up.
Her mother.
Standing beside her father.
And another man.
Elena stared at the third person.
“That's Adrian.”
Alexander nodded.
“They knew each other.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“My mother told me she never met anyone from your family.”
“Then she lied.”
Elena's chest tightened.
Everyone had lied to her.
Her father.
Her mother.
Alexander.
She turned toward him.
“Who am I supposed to trust?”
Alexander looked directly into her eyes.
“Me.”
She gave a bitter laugh.
“You rejected me.”
“To protect you.”
“You broke me.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe I wasn't enough.”
His eyes softened.
“You were always more than enough.”
Silence filled the warehouse.
For one dangerous moment, Elena forgot everything else.
She remembered their first kiss.
Their first dance.
The promises they had made.
Then she remembered the wedding.
She stepped away.
“Don't.”
Alexander frowned.
“Don't what?”
“Make me remember why I loved you.”
His voice became quieter.
“Why?”
“Because I don't want to love you anymore.”
He stared at her.
“And if you still do?”
She couldn't answer.
Before either of them could say another word, a noise came from the back of the warehouse.
They both turned.
Alexander immediately moved in front of Elena.
“Who's there?”
No answer.
He reached inside his jacket.
“Stay behind me.”
They moved cautiously through the darkness.
Another sound came from behind a stack of crates.
Alexander rushed toward it.
Elena followed.
They reached the back room.
It was empty.
Except for a chair.
And a single envelope resting on it.
Alexander picked it up.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He handed it to Elena.
Her name was written across the front.
ELENA CARTER.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a letter.
She read the first line.
My daughter, if you're reading this, then I'm already gone.
Elena stopped breathing.
She continued.
There are people who will tell you that I died. Don't believe them.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“My father wrote this.”
Alexander nodded.
She forced herself to continue.
The key around your neck will lead you to the truth, but never give it to Adrian Blackwood.
Elena touched the key.
“What does that mean?”
Alexander looked at her.
“I don't know.”
She continued reading.
If Adrian finds you, do not trust anything he says. He knows what happened twelve years ago. He knows why your mother disappeared. Most importantly, he knows the truth about the Blackwood Trust.
Elena's breathing became uneven.
Her mother hadn't disappeared by accident.
Someone had taken her.
She looked at Alexander.
“My mother was kidnapped.”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I found evidence of it three years ago.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was trying to find proof.”
“You should have told me!”
“I couldn't.”
“You always have an excuse.”
Alexander stepped closer.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Elena looked away.
The words hurt because part of her believed him.
Then something caught her attention.
A faint clicking sound came from beneath the floor.
She looked down.
“Did you hear that?”
Alexander immediately became alert.
“Step back.”
He moved a wooden crate aside.
Beneath it was a small metal panel.
The same symbol from Elena's key was engraved on it.
Alexander looked at her.
“The key.”
Elena hesitated.
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
“Then why are you asking me to use it?”
“Because your father wanted you to find this.”
Elena slowly removed the key from around her neck.
She inserted it into the panel.
Click.
The floor shifted.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a black box.
Elena's hands shook as she lifted it.
She opened the box.
Inside were several photographs, a USB drive, and an old newspaper.
She picked up the newspaper.
The headline made her blood run cold.
BILLIONAIRE BUSINESSMAN AND WIFE KILLED IN MYSTERIOUS FIRE.
Elena stared at the photograph beneath the headline.
It showed a young couple.
The man was Adrian Blackwood.
She looked at Alexander.
“This says Adrian died twenty years ago.”
Alexander nodded.
“Exactly.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“Then how is he alive?”
Before Alexander could answer, a loud metallic sound echoed through the warehouse.
The main door slammed shut.
Elena turned.
The lights suddenly came on.
Hundreds of tiny red laser dots appeared across the walls.
Alexander pulled Elena behind him.
A distorted voice came through a hidden speaker.
“Welcome back, Alexander.”
Alexander's face hardened.
“Adrian.”
A slow laugh echoed through the warehouse.
“You finally brought her.”
Elena looked around.
“Where are you?”
“You don't need to see me yet.”
Alexander raised his weapon.
“Show yourself.”
“Still protecting her?”
“Yes.”
Adrian laughed.
“Even after she learns what your family did to hers?”
Elena's heart pounded.
“What did his family do?”
There was a long silence.
Then Adrian answered.
“Ask Alexander why your father disappeared.”
Elena slowly turned toward Alexander.
“What is he talking about?”
Alexander remained silent.
“Alexander?”
His silence frightened her more than Adrian's voice.
The warehouse doors began closing.
Adrian's voice returned.
“Bring me the key, Elena.”
Elena clutched the key.
“And if I refuse?”
“You'll never see your mother again.”
Her heart shattered.
“You're lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Alexander grabbed Elena's hand.
“Don't listen to him.”
Adrian laughed.
“You still don't understand, Alexander.”
The lights went out.
“She's not just the key.”
A gunshot exploded through the darkness.
Elena screamed.
Alexander pulled her against him.
And Adrian whispered through the speakers:
“She is the reason this war began.”
TO BE CONTINUED.
