38Time passed. How much she could not have known. Each second can seem like ten to a totally isolated captive. About twenty minutes elapsed in real time, which to Kate felt like several hours. Suddenly she heard the scrape of the outside door as it opened, and knew she wasn’t alone. Someone, presumably a man, came into the bedroom of the suite. He made no noise, but she could sense him near the end of the bed, probably staring down at her defenseless body. He said nothing. Kate was sure he was thinking how he was going to hurt her. No. That was just her imagination, she told herself. How do I know that? Maybe he’s not the man Ellis has given me to?
