Leah and Sath walked back to the apple orchard. The orchard spread out far with rows of trees heavy with fruit. Between the rows of trees, the sunlight peeked through the leaves, with the golden beams creating patterns on the ground. The birds were chirping, and Leah was loving every moment of the trip.
"Hey, I really appreciate you taking me around. It was amazing" she smiled at Sath.
"Ivory City is nice, but a city can't compare to the natural beauty Shadow village has to offer" Sath replied.
Leah stared at him for a while. Her curiosity got the better of her and she had to ask. "How do you know so much about my village?" she queried.
"Hmm? Yeah, I've been there once." Sath replied.
Before Leah could ask any more, they turned at a corner, and as they rounded up the corner, the trees opened up to reveal a quiet clearing. Leah froze and stopped abruptly. Sath followed her gaze and saw what stopped Leah. In the cluster of trees, stood Liam, with his arms wrapped around Seline. Their kissing and moaning sounds echoed through the clearing.
Sath saw Leah's face crumple and as she took a step back, she bumped into Sath. Leah quickly turned away and started to walk away as fast as she could, but Sath saw the shimmer of tears in her eyes. Sath caught up to her after Leah rushed quite far from the scene.
"Leah—" Sath began, his voice soft as usual.
"Don't," she whispered, her voice trembling. She blinked furiously trying to keep her tears from falling but it was to no avail. She felt stupid. How could she have thought, even for a second that Liam, Prince Liam, had feelings for her? She had thought, their library meetings meant something. How wrong was she. Tears started falling uncontrollably. Unable to control herself, she leaned on a nearby tree and wrapped her arms around herself as if to stop the pain in her heart.
Sath stood next to her, he hesitated to speak as he feared she could get hurt even more. "He's not worth it" he finally said.
Leah glanced up at him and wiped her tears. "I'm sorry I'm like this. I don't know what I was thinking" Leah laughed bitterly. Her heart felt as if it was broken in a million pieces.
"If someone doesn't see how amazing you are, that's their loss" Sath added. His voice steady and his deep brown eyes piercing into hers.
"You're just saying that" Leah let out a shaky laugh.
"I mean it," Sath said, stepping closer to her. His gaze was earnest and his usual easy going demeanor replaced with something quieter and deeper. "You deserve someone who would choose you, for you. Someone who sees you—really sees you. Not someone who would ever choose Seline or anyone else over you"
Leah couldn't take her eyes off Sath. Just a few minutes ago her heart felt struck by something. But at that moment as Sath's eyes pierced into hers, the world stood still around them. The rustling of the leaves, the sound of birds, every sound became distant, fading into background.
"Thank you" Leah's voice came out barely audible. She stepped forward, and gently let her head rest on his chest.
Startled for a second, but quickly recovered from it, Sath quickly pulled her into a gentle hug. The chaos in Leah's heart slowed down and she felt warm inside. It wasn't anything like she had imagined with Liam. But as Leah stood in Sath's quiet embrace, she felt safe...truly safe. And the hint of a thought crept in her mind. Maybe, just maybe, this was what she needed all along.
