Her name escaped my lips before I could stop myself. The sound of it hung in the air, which immediately drew her attention. She turned to me slowly. And when her eyes met mine, I felt my chest tightened.
She didn’t say anything at first. She just stood there. Her face looked calm but I couldn’t figure out what was running in her mind. My heart was pounding so heavily and loudly that it was almost the only thing I could hear. Inside my head, Trent was coaching me on what to do. He was urging me to do something. His voice was so loud and commanding it almost irritated the hell out of me.
‘Say something. Move. Don’t just stand there.’
But I couldn’t. My feet felt rooted to the floor. My throat felt dry as I struggled to form words.
