I didn’t know why seeing Katie crumple to the ground sent a jolt through me. My instinct almost urged me to rush to her side to ensure she was okay. But I clamped down on the impulse. I forced my feet to stay rooted in place.
This was her fault, wasn’t it?
She brought this on herself with her arrogance and empty boldness. This would be a lesson she won't forget for the rest of her life.
“She deserved it,” I muttered to myself. But the words didn’t sit right with me.
Trent supported that lingering feeling with a yell inside my head. "You’re being heartless!"
"She lied," I shot back and smirked despite the discomfort I was feeling in my chest. "If she wanted to prove something, she should have been ready for the consequences."
