A Whole New Kingdom

1035 Words
We had been in the forest for hours and the only thing that was keeping me entertained was the nature surrounding us, since Killian had said we should be silent the whole trip. The peace came to an end when I saw a figure watching us from the tree. "Killian, there's someone watching us," I whispered to him, which caused his attention to focus on me. I nodded my head back to the tree we had passed and watched as he realized. Looking at the trees now, I could see more figures coming out of the trees. "Is everything fine little one?" I heard Aaroxx ask. I look up to see him circling the area a little further from where we were. "Just some people here, nothing to worry about," I whispered, trying not to worry him. "I can feel your emotions," he spoke causing my eyes to widen, "but I trust you and Killian have this handled." "We really need to talk about your powers," I replied. "We've entered territory, we just have to find out if they're good or bad," he whispered to me, cutting my conversation with Aaroxx off. Killian came off his horse and I followed suit. The people were now emerging from the woods and I grabbed on to Killian's hand so we wouldn't separate, and surprisingly, he hadn't thrown it off. They looked at us with interest and then a dark-skinned lady stepped through the gathering. Her ears were pointed and she had a nubian-shaped nose with an oval head shape. Her eyes were amber and her hair was dyed black. "State your business here," her voice boomed through the once quiet forest. "We've come here on a mission to retrieve the Queen of Synovia. It is said she left clues in each kingdom, and you have been the first we stumbled upon," Killian said. "And who is your companion?" she questioned. I introduced myself as "Adora Duras" and extended my hand to shake hers. "You're the chosen one," she stated. She took my hand and shook it with a smile etched on her face. "Yes, I am," I replied, matching her smile. "We will have the King know of your arrival, if you continue on your path you will see the village," she told us.  "Thank you," I told her, while Killian gave her a nod, "Oh before we leave, do you perhaps have space for a dragon." "I think we can make something work," she answered. "Great, goodbye for now," I replied, jumping back onto my horse. As soon as we had past everybody, I quickly burst out laughing. "What is so funny?" Killian asked from beside me. "Nothing, I always laugh after awkward situations," I responded causing him, to nod his head. "Before we enter their village, I must warn you that they are not too fond of female fighting," he said after a few moments of silence, "The King believes a woman's place is in the house and it is the men jobs to protect." "But Clementine seemed to be in charge of that little clique back there," I rebutted. "That means she had to do some things to get her position or she has friends in high place," he explained. I nodded and remained silent for the rest of the trip, pondering what he had just said. The first town we come across is sexist, which was going to put a dent in our tour. I couldn't help but to think about turning around as we approached the forest clearing. I drew my backpack closer to me as we stepped out into the clearing, and even the village reminded me of Mole's Town from Game of Thrones. The tone was hostile, and with bows and knives protruding from the doorways, I assumed they went to fight every other day. There were a few people on the streets, but they were unconcerned about our presence. When I looked around at the playground, I saw children isolated from one another gazing at nothing in particular instead of playing, covered in mud and rags. When we finally arrived at the palace gates the guards stood taller, if possible. We jumped of the horses and walked up to them, we stood there for a few minutes staring at each other, well to be fair Killian did while I stared around and pursed my lip since I hated eye contact. The staring came to an end as a tremor shook the ground, indicating Aaroxx's arrival, which I could confirm by their wide-eyed expressions. The gates suddenly opened and I pass the guards silently with my sword now across my back and bag in hand, when we were far enough from the guards I turned towards Killian to ask questions. "What was that about?"  "They probably thought Clementine was bluffing about the chosen one being a woman," he answered, "And with that said there will be uncomfortable questions asked. So please try to bear with it until we find the clue and when we are leaving you can tell him everything you want to say." "I can't promise you," I answered, causing him to frown, "but, I’ll try." "That's enough for me," he sighed, "For the Queen." "For the Queen," I smiled. "I can't promise you," I said which caused him to frown, "but, Ill try." I could hear the castle doors open from my vantage point on the graveled path. When I looked up, I saw a pale, heavyset man with a crown on his head. His hair was brown with grey spots, as I could see from the few hairs poking out. His nose was curved, and I could see his hazel eyes from here. He had a grimace on his lips when he glanced over me. "Is it true that he is the one who is sexist?" As I ascended the palace steps, I remarked, my tone humorous. "I realize it's surprising," he replied quietly. We soon arrived to the top, where he stood in all his magnificence, despite the fact that Killian towered over him. "WELCOME TO ALALA!" he shouted causing me to cringe as spit flew out of his mouth.  This is gonna be dreadful.
