Prior to arriving, Peter, the Bishop of London, had talked to members of his diocese about the hotel. People he trusted in various parishes were strongly against his visit, especially Father John Simpson, an old, trusted friend and colleague.
‘You’re giving credence to what is little more than supernatural nonsense,’ Fr. John warned.
‘It’s possible you are right, and I have considered that; however, it seems an opportunity to show the strength of the church. We are unafraid of supernatural forces we know do not exist, and of new science, if indeed that is what it is.’ Peter hoped he had convinced his friend but John was quick to respond.
